David “Excellent accommodation.”
Lovely hosts.
Lovely hosts.

Sarah “The property was in a pretty village within good distance from all local amenities and nearby attractions and places to see.”
It is conveniently adjoined to The Wheatsheaf Pub (house owned by the landlord and his very nice wife!). The pub is good as long as you are happy to eat early. We were able to take our 3 dogs to the house (and Pub) and the garden is fully enclosed although no grass! The house could have been cleaner; the showers were very poor with NO power and rather grubby, especially the twin bedded one. Barely a trickle. The first floor bedroom windows were nigh impossible to open. Thank goodness we hadn't been there in the height of summer. There is a Raeburn in the kitchen and thank goodness an electric cooker as well. We were advised by the Owner not to tamper with the Raeburn settings which meant it was barely hot enough to warm through our morning croissants and simmering on a hotplate was a non starter! The 3 of us all know about cooking on a range but if the Raeburn is purely to heat the water then this should be made clear. We were told by the owners that they were looking for a house to retire to so we got the distinct impression they were winding down - this was very obvious, sadly.
- Sarah, September 2022Cliff “Fantastic in every way.”
Well equipped, clean and delightfully quirky. Wonderful hosts. Marvellous meals at pub next door.
- Cliff, July 2022Janet “The property is very nice, spacious and well equipped.”
Easy parking in front of the property. Great to be next to the pub which served the most delicious food. It was always very busy but never noisy. You can order food and drinks to be served to your table in the cottage which was definitely a bonus, The garden is secure for dogs but is all gravel. At least a small lawn would have been nice to put down a blanket to sunbathe on or to have a couple of sun loungers. The outdoor dining area was great to have. We didn’t use the pizza oven or BBQ but appreciated that the facility was there. Plus the outdoor ping pong table. Inside there is a cupboard full of games, some books and children's toys. A nice big jug of milk in the fridge but no welcome pack. The owners did make us sandwiches on arrival though so we could relax before heading off to find the shops. There are no local shops. It is best to go into Whitby to the big supermarkets as the nearest shops only offer the basics. Overall the property is very good.

Cottage was great for 6 adults & 3 dogs Outside area could be better, as in seating Ping pong table takes too much space Washing line not working
- Katie, June 2022David “Close to all areas we like visiting in very nice countryside setting.”
Cottage sufficient for our needs especially with it being dog friendly. No complaints but owners available next door if required.
- David, May 2022Sian “We had a lovely stay at Wheatsheaf Cottage.”
The location is beautiful and so peaceful and everyone in the village is so friendly. The cottage is beautiful with a lovely open fire and a traditional Rayburn, we really enjoyed our stay and would love to rebook for next year. The owners were very friendly and helpful, we had an issue with the lights one day which was resolved straight away with no issues. A couple of things could be improved; we really struggled to find any baking trays in the kitchen and the cooker needed a clean as there was a lot of grease in the bottom which smelt quite bad when we used the oven on the first night (we did clean this ourselves the next day). We also really struggled to open any windows downstairs meaning on warmer days with the Rayburn on it really did get too warm in the cottage. Other than that it was a brilliant holiday!
- Sian, April 2022Fiona “We had the most wonderful stay at Wheatsheaf Cottage.”
The owners made us feel very welcome and worked so hard to ensure we had a great family holiday. We would highly recommend staying here for a relaxing break. Thank you
- Fiona, April 2022Paul “Excellent dog-friendly holiday cottage that is very well equipped, conveniently located for local walks and attractions and next door to a pub that serves excellent food and beer.”
- Paul, April 2022Cathrine “Fabulous stay!”
Just wish we could have stayed longer. Our two dogs felt at home and we were spoilt with such a lovely pub and great food (best Sunday lunch) right next door. Highly recommend. Thank you to Elaine and Nigel for being so welcoming.
- Cathrine, February 2022Paula “A fantastic property and the house owners couldn’t have been better.”
They replaced wood and coal most days and took away rubbish and recycling. They offered extra blankets when it was cold and we felt very well looked after.
- Paula, February 2022Allison “We had a lovely stay at Wheatsheaf cottage and received a warm welcome from Nigel the pub landlord.”
The cottage is ideally placed to explore the North Yorkshire coast and the many lovely beaches. It was a real bonus having the pub next door and we had several meals there - all excellent. As we had 2 dogs with us Nigel reserved a table in the bar so they could come with us. The garden was fully enclosed so we could let the dogs out safely. As we stayed in January it was too cold to make full use of the garden but it would be great in the summer. I would have no hesitation in booking the cottage again.
- Allison, January 2022Kathryn “Lovely hosts, very welcoming.”
We enjoyed our stay, cottage perfect for our needs. There were a few minor items we needed in the kitchen, side plates and potato masher for example but did not detract from a very happy stay .
- Kathryn, December 2021Elwyn “Very friendly and helpful owners Nigel and Elaine, nothing was too much trouble, lovely cottage which was clean and comfortable and the bonus was having the occasional meal at their pub next door which was both cosy and served beautiful food.”
One small constructive criticism- very dim lighting in the cottage which although made it cosy as we sat next to the fire, it proved difficult when trying to complete a puzzle and while I was knitting. Maybe a couple of standard lamps with angle poise would help. Would definitely love to stay again sometime soon.
- Elwyn, November 2021Kirsty “What a beautiful cottage one of the nicest establishments I have ever stayed at, nothing was too much trouble for the gentleman who welcomed us, right next door to a lovely local pub , very quiet village but near enough to Whitby will definitely go again but stay longer next time!”
Amazing
- Kirsty, September 2021Tracey “The hosts Nigel and Elaine were helpful and friendly.”
Had really nice meals at their pub next door. The house was perfect and the garden well used ( table tennis and pizza oven). Great peaceful location, a short drive away from various beaches. Recommend Saltwick, Runswick and Staithes beaches in particular.
- Tracey, June 2021Barbara “What an amazing cottage in a wonderful little village.”
The hosts were brilliant, kept checking in with us to see if we needed anything. Brought us fresh eggs one morning, with the offer that we could go and pick our own freshly laid eggs. Sunday lunch in the pub next door was truly spectacular, a real must, but book early as it is busy. The ping pong table was a great hit and the barbecue was great. We ate out a few nights, felt like we were abroad. The enclosed garden was fantastic for our two dogs. Will definitely go back.
- Barbara, May 2021C. “Beautiful cottage on the edge of the Moors close to the North Yorkshire Coast.”
We had a wonderful welcome of a light log fire on a dull cool day .The cottage brimmed with character and was beautifully furnished we would also recommend booking a meal in the adjoining Wheatsheaf Pub food and atmosphere wonderful after a day walking and exploring the Moors and the many beautiful bays. We would definitely return!
- C., May 2021Dawn “A lovely cottage, very well equipped and in a great location.”
The hosts own the pub next door, where the food is fantastic, and they could not be more helpful. The cottage is well furnished and comfortable with a lovely open fire that was very welcoming after colder days walking.
- Dawn, May 2021Mark “Very comfortable cottage.”
Welcomed with a cup of tea after a long journey, which was greatly appreciated. The table tennis and covered outdoor seating were enjoyed by young and old. Well located for the moors and coast.
- Mark, April 2021Danielle “The hosts were always on hand and very helpful.”
The place was great, lovely antique furniture and very comfortable. The windproof seating area was great too as we could enjoy sitting outside when it might have been too breezy and cold.
- Danielle, April 2021Sarah “This is a great cottage for a big family or group of friends.”
There is plenty of room so people don't feel on top of each other and a lovely garden/outdoor eating area for when the weather is good. The village and pub are very attractive and there are lots of walks from the doorstep. The surrounding area is spectacular, with so much to do on the Moors and by the Coast. We had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
- Sarah, August 2020Sarah “Great cottage, lovely quiet village but close to Whitby and with some great walks from the village.”
All very comfortable and outdoor seating area ( covered ) and BBQ was a real bonus, as well as the pizza oven. Kids loved the table tennis. The owners were lovely, really went the extra mile to make sure all was perfect. The pub next door is very much about food and the food is gorgeous.

The whole weekend was excellent such a lovely welcoming host and burning logfire food in the restaurant that cannot be beaten for quality just perfect thanks
- Tony, October 2019Paul “A little disappointed with the cookware and utensils provided.”
As the property is meant to sleep 8 we would have expected large saucepans, several baking trays, more than 2 sharp knives and a frying pan. We ended up buying a runcible spoon and a set of sharp knives and a frying pan was provided by the landlord on asking. Nevertheless a beautiful cottage in a beautiful place.
