ACCESS STATEMENT - FLYING SCOTSMAN, WHITBY,
Flying Scotsman is a period house in the centre of Whitby.
Arrival and Car Parking
The roads around the Flying Scotsman are within parking zone W. Parking discs and permits are available from the Tourist Information Centre.
Entrance and Ground Floor
Access to the front door is through the front garden, which is laid to flagstones with borders. The path has a clear opening width of 85cm and has a 15cm step up from the pavement. A further 15cm step takes you to the front door. The doorway is 86cm wide and has a door knob at 85cm and the lock at 118cm. The door opens into an inner hallway which measures 1M by 1.1M and has a tiled floor. The door to the lounge is 85cm wide and has the door knob at 75cm high and the lock at 118cm.
Most of the internal timber doors in this property have round door knobs for handles and are all around 90cm from floor level. The house has central heating through-out.
The lounge has laminate flooring and measures 3.9M by 5.8M. The room contains two sofas, a single chair, a wall-mounted TV and a coffee table on a loose rug. The room also has a non-working open fire on a granite hearth. The light fitting in the centre of the room is low at 176cm but is positioned above the coffee table. The stairs leading to the first floor are off the lounge and there is an under stairs storage cupboard.
The lounge leads through a 69cm doorway into the kitchen. The kitchen is 4.1M by 4.8M and has a stone tiled floor. There are a number of wall and floor cupboards and a timber worktop at 91cm from floor level. This room has a free-standing electric oven with 5 burner gas hob and a free-standing fridge with the handle at 60cm. A microwave sits on top of the worktop. The kitchen table in the centre of the room seats 8 and has a height of 79cm. The space around the table varies on each side between 90cm and 1.4M.
The kitchen leads through an 80cm wide door into the utility area. The stone floor from the kitchen continues into this area. The room measures 1.5M by 2.3. The room contains a free-standing dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer. This room also contains the combi boiler.
Access to the rear yard is through the back door which is 74cm wide. The rear yard is laid to flagstones and measures 4.2M by 5.8M. There are five steps of around 20cm high, which leads to a flat area which contains a table and chairs.
Stairs
The stairs through-out the house are all 80cm wide with a 65cm wide carpet runner. The stairs are 19cm high and there are spindles with a handrail at 92cm.
Access to the first floor is via the stairs from the lounge. There are 10 stairs up to a carpeted half landing, then a further 4 stairs up to the first floor landing.
First floor
The first floor landing is carpeted and is 2.6M by 3.3M. The landing leads to the following:
The front carpeted double bedroom is accessed through a 77cm doorway. This room is 3.7M by 3.9M and contains a large double bed, a built-in wardrobe, a chest of drawers and 2 bedside tables. Mattress top is 60cm from floor level. The spaces at sides of bed are 1.4M to the left and 80cm to the right. This room also has a non-working fireplace.
The bathroom is accessed via a 76cm wide door. The bathroom has a tiled floor and measures 3M by 3.2M. The room contains a claw foot bath, a WC, a wash basin and a quadrant shower enclosure. There is a 10cm step up into the shower enclosure and the internal sizes are 85cm by 85cm. The shower enclosure doorway is 50cm wide.
A 76cm wide corridor leads to a twin bunk room. The room is carpeted and measures 1.5M by 4M. The mattress heights are 60cm and 150cm. The top bunk is accessed via a built in ladder. The top bunk has restricted head height. The ceiling slopes from 70cm down to 40cm from top of the mattress. The space to the side of the bunks narrows to 40cm.
Access to the second floor is via the first floor hallway and is via 9 stairs leading to a carpeted half landing and then a further 6 stairs up to the second floor landing.
Second floor
The second floor landing is carpeted and leads through a 76cm doorway into a twin bedroom. The room is carpeted and is 3.8M by 3.9M. The room contains two single beds, a chest of drawers and two bedside tables. There is a built in wardrobe in the chimney breast alcove. The mattresses are 60cm from floor level. The spaces around the beds are 90cm to the left, 50cm to the right and 30cm between. The room contains an original but non-working fireplace.
Access to the third floor is via the second floor landing. There are 9 stairs up to the third floor.
Third floor
The master bedroom is accessed via a 67cm doorway. Once through the door there are 5 stairs leading up to the bedroom area. There is a drop of 1M at the top of the stairs. The room is carpeted and is 3.7M by 4.1M. The room contains a double bed, a chest of drawers and two bedside tables. The mattress top is 60cm from floor level. The space around the beds is 90cm to both sides. There is restricted head height in this room as the ceiling slopes from 2.1M in the centre of the room and reduces to 1.1M at both sides of the room. The master bedroom leads through a 60cm doorway into an en-suite. The room has a tiled floor and measures 1.2M by 2.8M. The room contains a WC, a wash basin and a quadrant shower enclosure. The shower has a 10cm step up into it and has internal sizes of 75cm by 75cm. The doorway opening is 37cm wide.
