“Lovely property with a beautiful garden.”

Plenty of seating space for dining and relaxing. Kitchen was well supplied and the welcome pack was much appreciated. We enjoyed the daily visits from the chickens. Things to consider for improvement: swap the size of fridge and freezer - the under counter fridge was too small for six people and the freezer was unused apart from ice cubes. We all found the temperature controls on the showers stiff and difficult to change - we all came out on the first morning commenting on how hot the water ...

We all found the temperature controls on the showers stiff and difficult to change - we all came out on the first morning commenting on how hot the water was and how we were unable to change the temperature by very much. Finally got the hang of it in two of the bathrooms with dry hands and a bit more confidence that we would not break it. No information folder or emergency contact details were in the house. We left a message on the app on Sunday (Sykes was not open either and it was a bank holiday weekend) and only had a response on Tuesday- luckily it wasn’t urgent. However, later in the week the electricity went off and there was no way to get out through the electric gates until we happened to spot someone working on the property.

Hi Debra, I do hope that the inconvenience didn’t spoil your stay and we can only apologise for the power outage but the whole of north of York was affected with a lack of power for the few hours in the afternoon. I’m glad that you got the hang of the shower controls and if you visit us again which we very much hope you will, we are on site 24/7 only yards away and happy to help or offer advice any time day or night. We love having guests staying in our cottage and we genuinely want them to have the best experience possible so please don’t think that any issue is too small to bother us with and we hope to host you all again sometime in the future Property Owner

“Lovely cottage, we booked it for our family of six adults to celebrate our fiftieth wedding anniversary.”

Three en-suite double bedrooms, the largest has a shower over the bath and and the others have a walk in shower. All on one level and a huge space to park at least six cars. This is important to note because the listing says space for six cars in one place and space for two cars in another so can be confusing. Boris the cat likes to visit and so do the hens. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

“Our most recent visit to Providence Cottage was our sixth over the last three years or so.”

The cottage and location are glorious. It’s private and there are plenty of places to explore. Easingwold is less than ten minutes drive away and coffee shops and good pubs abound. We arrived on the same day that Storm Amy paid us a visit. Driving rain & high winds - and they brought issues. The rain was relentless for hours and reached a point where water was coming in through one of the spotlight fittings. Not a great deal but sufficient to be disconcerting. The patio doors revealed themselves to be anything but draught proof. Sure… these were exceptional circumstances perhaps but the draughts through windows and doors were noticeable throughout the week. We pushed tissue paper between the gaps as a temporary respite. A simple weather strip would maybe be a better fix? In previous visits; the Velux blinds could be opened and closed via remote control. No longer. Instead, black paper had been taped over the glass in each room, negating them as a source of light; a significant problem in rooms two and three which only have a very small window at ‘the far end’ of the room to provide light & ventilation. Rooms two & three were very dingy. The type of paper pasted over each Velux looked like a ‘quick & temporary fix / bit of a bodge’ - not in keeping with the overall look & style of the cottage. The cottage has WiFi but it was pitifully slow. The fastest speed we got all week - sitting next to the router was 8 Mbps. Unusable if more than one person wanted to use it. Even the TV picture regularly broke up and was unable to stream programmes reliably. We gave up trying to watch tv. Getting a WiFi signal in the main bedroom proved nigh on impossible. Any brief signal soon dropped out. Even a simple WiFi booster plug would be likely to improve the range of the signal but… it’s not going to get over 8 Mbps. Insufficient, I would suggest, for many people these days. Finally… maybe the bed in the Master Bedroom is nearing the end of its days supplying comfortable and restful sleeping conditions? Neither my wife or I slept well all week. We left the cottage the night before we were due to leave as neither of us felt we could do another evening on that bed. (The second bedroom / bed was little better.) In summary…. Providence Cottage is a fabulous cottage and perfect location that, unfortunately, felt in need of a little care and attention to bring it back to the spec it was a few years ago.

“We really liked our stay in the cottage.”

The welcome basket was lovely and very much appreciated. The cottage was lovely and clean and in good order. There were a couple of small things that would help especially if you have a small child like we did, the latch on the side gate was broke so the side gate did not stay closed, and we could not control the heat of two of the showers enough which meant they were a little hotter than we would have liked. These however did not stop us from enjoying our stay. Our granddaughter loved the visits from the hens each day and the use of a lovely sized garden. You can take a nice walk from the cottage into the village of Easingwold. Would recommend Providence Cottage to anyone looking to stay in this lovely part of the country.

“Lovely location.”

Very peaceful and tranquil. Perfect for a break away from daily life. The property would benefit from more kitchen equipment, specifically saucepans, salt and pepper, mop,etc. The showers were difficult to reduce the temperature, even when following the instructions to the letter. The welcome basket was a lovely touch which was enjoyed by all. The children particularly enjoyed the chicken visits and watching out for deer .

“Welcome basket looked like it was made up of products that had been left in the cupboard.”

Toilet roll one whole roll per toilet no good if you have five adults staying for a week. Tumble dryer not working fantastic when you have a baby! No bins in rooms. No locks on bathroom doors. Extractor fan in bathroom does not work. Awful caked on black greasy baking tins I personally have thrown away better ones than this. I bought some from the local supermarket. Windows do not open more than six inches. What happens if there is a fire? No written plan. Wasps, wasps, wasps everywhere! No contact number for the housekeeper! Area in the hallway absolutely lethal we had water coming in due to the rain my 1 year old granddaughter slipped over and hurt herself. Apparently this is not a new fault as the wooden floor had started to lift up. Finally the worst of the lot when it rained and it did frequently water pored in through alight fitting in the lounge by the French doors I think they call that a FIRE HAZARD.

“A beautiful setting!”

So much so that we will be returning, I cannot pick any faults, it was perfect for our severely disabled daughter in a wheelchair, if I were to say one thing it would be the adjoining door between the kitchen and Old office, we were aware of having to be extra quiet after 8 pm if we were in the kitchen in case the little girl next door who was only around one years old was going to sleep, I think it would be good if there was something that could be put up either side of the door just to break the noise barrier to save people disturbing the cottage and people staying in the cottage disturbing them, I know the owner probably needs access but I’m sure something could be put up that could be easily removed when there is nobody staying in there this is literally the only thing I can pick out other than that it is gorgeous, we could move in tomorrow

“A lovely well laid out cottage set in the grounds of a farm.”

Well located north of York & accessible to North Yorkshire sights. There were 3 comfortable ensuite bedrooms & spacious lounge/ dining area with large table. Kitchen was well equipped. A few kitchen appliances & fitments are in need maintenance. There is a beautiful view west out through the lounge windows onto a spacious garden with large garden table & chairs. Lovely sitting there late afternoon as the sunset. We had regular visits from the dog & the 2 hens.

“Cottage was excellent.”

Only discrepancy in the listing is that the second double bedroom is a en suite shower room not a bathroom. So there is one en suite bathroom and two en suite shower rooms. This was fine for us though. Cottage is well furnished and maintained. It had everything we needed and was well situated to see a number of things. The welcome pack was appreciated. It was really quiet considering the proximity to the main road. The use of the garden was useful and was appreciated by the youngest members of the party. Would definitely book again.

Fantastic equipped kitchen., Garden was so quiet and peaceful. Cottage is within easy reach of so much to do .The owners were available if needed but left us to have a relaxing time.Beds were very comfy with feather duvets, so cosy . Each bedroom has an on suite,the showers were a little to hot, children must be supervised. we will undoubtedly be booking again

“Lovely bungalow in a good location.”

We met the gentleman who owned the property, who said if there was anything he could do for us just ask. He even offered us a lift to the local restaurant. The instructions for the house, said how to turn the heating on, just by a thermostat. The heating was obviously turned off, and there was no way we could over ride it. There was a note in the houses book stating someone else had the same problem! Such a shame. Otherwise a lovely stay. We should have to ask to turn it on!

Outside furniture and garden is lovely apart from the smell of the oil central heating tank. Details suggest king size bed unless you request twin but on arrival it was twin - not a problem for us. Very convenient for Easingwold which is a lovely village with fantastic coffee shops and a local market. Owners friendly dog likes to visit and very close to the horses stables and plenty of parking.

The kids liked waking up each morning to see the horses. My mum and dad enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and there was plenty of space for us all. Very clean, a kitchen with everything we needed. One suggestion (don't publish this) is to try and turn the hot water temperature down a bit on the tank if you can as it was very very hot. Kitchen was well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, freezer, cooker and microwave. Slightly hard to find in the dark at this time of year as there did not appear to be a sign at the end of the drive as was suggested in the instructions. However, it is within easy driving distance of local amenities and places of interest including York, Thirsk, Harrogate, Castle Howard, Byland and Rievaulx abbies. The welcome hamper was lovely but provision of things like dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid would also have been beneficial.

Extremely comfortable, clean, spacious and well equipped cottage ideally located as a base to explore the beautiful and varied villages, whilst also only a 20 minute drive into the centre of York. We recommend a trip to Helmsley which was our favourite. The grounds are amazing and if you’re lucky to have good weather you can sit out in complete peace - except for the occasional visit from Marlow the very friendly pup. Future guests should note that one of the bedrooms is a twin (the advert suggests 3 doubles). It wasn’t a problem for us but please do bear in mind. Thanks for a great stay.

“The outdoor space was fantastic - just what was needed after kids spent 6 months couped up at home.”

. The owners were lovely and allowed the children to play on their tree house and their dogs kept my daughter entertained for hours whilst she played outside. The hammock was a nice surprise too, great for relaxing and watching the sunset. The cottage itself is finished to a great standard and felt really homely, plenty of storage space in all bedrooms and the kitchen was well equipped The location is great, only a short drive to York (or the park and ride) and there is a nice walk into Easingwold, which took about 40 minutes. Would definitely book this cottage again if returning to the area

“The holiday itself was excellent.”

The property itself was very comfortable, met our location needs and was of a good standard of cleanliness despite a few large cobwebs around the lounge ceiling. The property may benefit from a little more crockery, cutlery, hand towels and tea towels. The cutlery basket in the dishwasher suffered from holes and will need replacing. Despite these minor comments, the cottage itself was fantastic, convenient to the explore the North Yorkshire sites and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. However, because of Sykes Cottages cancellation policy whereby we had to cancel our first booking 11 months prior to our reservation date and lost a portion of our deposit, we will not be using Sykes Cottages for our family get together in the future.

“Providence Cottage was excellent for what we needed.”

We were a party of 3, including my parents both in their eighties. My Dad has mobility issues so this cottage which is all on one level met his needs and I would recommend it for anyone in those circumstances (not wheelchair however). A couple of suggestions, the sofas in the living room were very comfortable however not ideal for someone older as they are more difficult to get out of. There is a good chair in the kitchen but this was too heavy to move. The owners were only next door but a book for the house would be useful - bin day, what to put in each bin, the usual stuff. The dishwasher wasn't working which was fine, these things happen but a note would have been good. Other than that this is a really great base for the area. Close to the lovely market town of Easingwold with its cafes and shops, the Howardian Hills and beyond. I would definitely recommend it. I'm happy for you to use the positives of this feedback - the other is an observation not a grumble. Please don't publish full name or email address.

About the location

EASINGWOLD

York 13 miles.

This small, historic market town lies within the Vale of York between the City and the Hambleton Hills, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Picturesque and peaceful, it is a perfect introduction to Herriot Country. The town's centre boasts a large market square surrounded by splendid Georgian buildings. There are pretty village greens with flowers and seats, and a good selection of shops, pubs and cafes. There is also an excellent community centre with a newly built fitness suite. Close by are many picturesque, well-kept villages and quiet lanes making it ideal for cycling. York, Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough and Yorkshire’s old famous abbey sites are all within easy reach. The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors and Coast are also within easy touring distance.
