Cholmley Cottage

Just spend 5 nights in the charming Cholmley Cottage, can’t fault a thing, spotlessly clean, very comfortable, great location for exploring North Yorkshire, parking space was a bonus two min walk to cottage, great big TV for chilling in the evening, milk, cookies and Yorkshire tea was left out for us arriving, it is on a busy road but didn’t bother us at all, next door to Jacksons butcher which is fabulous and very busy!

Very tasty breakfast rolls, would recommend and will definitely book again

Very nice cottage.

Lovely and clean with nice interior. Steps up stairs was a little tricky, but I managed. Bed was comfortable. I had to park my car in the butchers car park to get my case out of the car when I arrived. Then take my car to the allocated park spot diwn the road. This wasn't too much of a problem, as I was glad there was a parking space. It was a cosy place and good value for money. The tea and biscuit welcome pack was very thoughtful. On the whole, lovely. The only issue I had was the main road. It is a main road through the village, which had traffic. This sometimes woke me up and more so early in the morning. However, I am a light sleeper. I did reach for some cotton wool to act as ear plugs.

A lovely cottage, perfect for a couple and a great place to explore the area from.

Having car parking was a bonus and the butchers close by was wonderful.

We recently stayed at this cottage, and while it has some positives, there were enough issues that we probably wouldn’t return.

The location is excellent for exploring the local area, and we really enjoyed having The Bridge Inn just down the road, as well as the butcher next door, which does fantastic bacon rolls. Unfortunately, the cottage itself could do with some TLC. It would benefit from a fresh coat of paint, and the standard of cleaning wasn’t what we expected. There were cobwebs, a lot of dust, and the floors didn’t appear to have been cleaned properly. The bathroom has a shower attachment over the bath but no shower curtain or screen, which made showering awkward and resulted in water going everywhere. The Velux window in the bedroom was also broken during our stay. The toilet flush was also very poor and often took several flushes to clear properly, which became frustrating over the course of our stay. The welcome pack also needs updating. It appears to be around four years out of date, so information such as the bin collection dates is no longer accurate. Although the cottage is advertised as dog friendly, the outside space is very small and not really suitable if you’re travelling with a dog, as there’s no proper enclosed garden. One other downside was the traffic noise from the main road, which was much louder than we anticipated. We were also felt a little uncomfortable after a resident next door told us they weren’t particularly keen on holidaymakers. Overall, the location is the cottage’s biggest selling point, but because of the maintenance, cleanliness and other issues, we wouldn’t choose to stay here again.

This was the perfect little cottage, it felt like home from home.

The cottage is just a flat 40 minutes walk to Whitby alongside the railway track where steam trains pass and you walk under the Larpool viaduct. There is a little bench in the front garden which was lovely to sit and watch the world go by. We appreciated the very big TV whilst relaxing in the evenings and would like Netflix for ourselves now! The cottage was clean with everything you need. Having the famous Jackson Butchers next door but one was a bonus too! The parking wasn’t far away, right by the train station and was a very big generous space (our camper fitted very well). We would definitely stay again at this beautiful cottage. Thank you.

The the cottage was lovely had trouble with the key safe couldn't open it when we went home so had to ring up and was told to put keys in letterbox but no letter box so put them in the metal male box on the wall

Whilst the property was in an idyllic location it seemed very tired on the inside.

A previous review states there was only 1 sideplate and the owners response was there was more is'nt the case, there is only 1. The garden was neglected and full of weeds, i cleared some of the weeds and swept the garden area to make it cleaner for my dogs. The kitchen was very good and had everything you needed but lacked a freezer. The bathroom was incredible, but toilet flushing wasnt the best. The parking space opposite the local pub was an added bonus. The Butchers next door was fabulous,a must for everything you need.

We stayed at Chomley cottage for a bank holiday break.

The cottage is spacious for two guests & we enjoyed watching some films on the large TV, only issue is the sofa does not accommodate watching it very well. We appreciated having a separate dinning area, but the paintwork could do with a refresh due to a number of marks on the walls. The private parking space just down the road was very useful. The kitchen is well appointed but unfortunately there was only one tea plate so we had to share. The bed was nice and comfy, supportive but not too hard. The bedroom needs a deep clean as it was very dirty behind the bed & to each side, plus huge cobwebs. Rest of the cottage was relatively clean and tidy. As it says on the listing the cottage is situated on a busy road but the traffic noise did not bother us. Even with the traffic the little enclosed garden would have been nice to sit out in for a coffee but it was really dirty and unkept which was a shame. Appreciated the clawfoot bath for a soak but as no separate shower, just a shower head attached to taps it would benefit from a shower curtain of some sort. It was a little unusual to have two key safe boxes. The keys are in the front door one but although there is a front door key you cannot open that door from outside, you have to take the keys round to the back door. You can open the front door from the inside with a bit of effort, but not lock it & leave, that has to be done from the back. The bridge Inn pub just down the road was welcoming and served good food. All in all a pleasant stay but the cottage and garden could do with some TLC.

It's been our 3rd year.

Was surprised to find there wasnt even any milk biscuits and coffee like previous yrs. No kitchen roll and when I threw something in the bin also found no bin bag. Struggled with the lock to the key safe. Just little things seemed to have changed to what we found last time.

Lovely quirky cottage ,the welcome pack was a nice touch, comfortable bed , everything you need for a wee holiday and a great location.

The cottage was very clean and comfortable and close to amenities, the butchers next door was fantastic, only one issue there is no freezer so no ice for drunks etc

We absolutely loved our stay at Cholmley cottage.

It has such wonderful character, maintaining it's many original features with all the modern comforts you need. The kitchen is well fitted with everything you need to make a full meal. The only thing I would recommend is that when the fridge needs replacing, that one with an icebox be bought. The cottage is well placed for lovely walks including a walk alongside the rail track into Whitby. We were lucky enough to see the steam train pass. The parking space is real bonus as there is limited parking within the village. The Bridge Inn was great for a meal and dogs are very welcome. We will definitely be returning to this beautiful cottage in the future.

The cottage was pretty and cosy, with a lovely bath and good-sized TV.

However, my stay was made very stressful due to problems accessing the property on arrival, poor Wi-Fi, limited facilities (no freezer or washing machine), noisy road, and unhelpful and rude neighbours. The cleaning/support staff were extremely helpful once they arrived, but the initial experience was very challenging.

Loved cottage very comfy ,loved all the little hidden trinkets ,thought that was funny ,very clean an old fashioned but really cosy,would recommend this cottage

The property was lovely on the whole.

Although it is noted in the description, the stairs are very steep with a rope handrail to aid going upstairs. There was quite a lot of road noise up to around 11pm at night and the cottage was very dark without the lights, perfect for a cozy winter stay, but not so much in summer. No outside space to sit in except on the side of the road. The additional touches, like drinks and cake were very nice and the property was super clean. The points which I make I realise the owners can’t do much about and overall we found it a perfect base to explore the area and we were able to walk to Whitby and get the train back which was great and we didn’t need to use the car. The butchers, is amazing and does fantastic pies, and great bacon buns.

What a fantastic week we had in this wonderful cottage in ruswarp if you want to take a look bàck in time and a little bit of England like it used to be then this is the best place to stay we loved everything about it and could not praise it more highly thank you Marlene and Patrick

lovely cottage ideally situated for what we wanted and to discover the surrounding area in our short stay.

As with other reviews shower curtain option over the bath would be good for an improvement but didn't spoil the holiday experience. Ideal for walkers and dog owners

Lovely cottage and great attention to detail.

Loved the comfort and good quality furniture and appliances. The added extra touches for the dogs were lovely. Only slight negative was the busy road making the outside space unusable really and although there were several hand towels we only had one bath towel between two of us for a week. Otherwise couldn’t fault it and we had a lovely week.

Nice and comfortable cottage.

Parking space was great as it would have been difficult to park. Comfortable bed, spacious bedroom. Nice kitchen and eating area. Good size TV in the lounge. Great area and easy drives to go to Whitby, Scarborough, Pickering and many other places. To make the cottage even better would be more comfortable for two to watch the TV is it had a two seater recliner sofa for example, a fan for the bedroom as it got quite hot, and definitely needs a freezer as we could not take anything home, and had to throw away food as we could not freeze our ice packs, to hot to leave food items in the car as stopping over somewhere else for the night when we left to break the journey. Would go back if a freezer was provided.

We found it hard to shut front door it needs adjusting does not fit in keep,apart from that everything was ok.

Cosy cottage set in a lovely village.

Attention to detail was exceptional. However, the enclosed garden you describe is overgrown with dirty garden furniture not fit for use. We struggled to lock the doors when going out as they both stick badly due to swelling. There is no space in the kitchen to put food away other than the fridge. The bathroom very stylish but for safety reasons a slip mat in the bath needs go be considered I nearly had a bad fall trying to exit following a bath. Your bedroom is stunning and bed very comfy 5 star overall we had a lovely time and hope you take our comments as constructive feedback. Jackie

2nd stay at this cottage, in a perfect location, decorated nice throughout, bed was comfortable apart from the bottom sheet which was some flannel fabric, absolutely horrible, however did find some cotton sheets under bed so we put it on.

Also a spring summer duvet would have been better as the one on was extremely heavy. Pillows also extremely hard, my own preference maybe? The next thing was the hairs all over the rug, and the reason why is your shark hoover was blocked, so whoever cleaned before we got in hooves up next to nothing as the brushes were jammed on your hoover, I do have pictures of the wedge of fluff I got out of it, whoever is in charge of the cleaning or bed changing needs to be more thorough. Hopefully if we decide to come back you will have sorted these issues out, because it is a really nice cottage.

Walk into Whitby along the railway path is lovely.

An enjoyable stay at 'Chomley cottage' ; a quaint village, peaceful surroundings.

The house is well maintained; locals are friendly. lots of things to do; site seeing, walks, nice places to eat.

Very welcoming. The two of us and our 2 border Collies were very comfortable here. Fantastic position close to lovely walks and the train station was also a bonus. Car parking was great and only a very short walk from the house. We enjoyed the pub who were very friendly with good food, and 10/10 for the butches offering great products. We would book again.

The property was perfect for us, with everything we needed ( apart from a freezer section in the fridge).

A lovely butchers within yards of the property, and a twenty five minute or so walk into the town centre beside the railway and river.Was also a perfect hub to travel to other towns and cities. Fabulous little cottage, the pictures don’t do it justice, it’s so much nicer in reality.

The room is so cosy, with a huge tv(bonus), kitchen had everything we needed, shame it didn’t have a freezer, even just a freezer box in fridge, but we did manage okay, especially when it’s right next to a fabulous little butcher’s. The bedroom was spacious, bed comfy, pillows too hard for me, perhaps give an option?. Lovely bathroom, if there’s a way to shower that would be good, like one of them hoop curtains?, we made do so not a major issue, just a little issue for people with back problems getting out of baths. The car park space was a real bonus, only a few minutes down the street as the streets filled up pretty quickly, just unload at side of butchers then park down the road, we did get neighbours looking, however lots of people doing it down this street all day. Ruswarp is a perfect location, only 30 minutes walk to Whitby via train track trail, perfect for our little cockapoo. If it’s available for our next holiday we will be back.

Fantastic cottage for a short break.

It was very spacious and well appointed. The butchers next door sold a lovely bacon sandwich which set us up for the day. The parking provided was a two minute walk from the cottage which was fine. We used the butchers car park to unload and load our car to save carrying everything too and from the car parking space. My only very slight suggestion would be to have a curtain round the bath so you could shower standing up. But all in all a great short break.

Absolutely loved our stay and we have already looked to stay again but sadly its booked up on the dates we are free.

Easy to park, across from a very nice and friendly village pub. Lovely little front terrace just enough space for us to sit have breakfast and our 2 spaniels to walk around. Very comfy sofa and bed. Nice touches in the bathroom like bubble bath and muscle soak, also milk, coffee, tea and biscuits provided. Iron, ironing board, hairdryer and well equipped kitchen. The only thing missing was a proper mop, there was a bucket but no mop, there was one of those mops you attach a floor wipe too which is no good on an bumpy slate floor especially with dogs. Enough drawers and space to hang clothes. Will stay again.

What a lovely little cottage with lots of special features.

It even has off road parking. The owners are very thoughtful, leaving every day items for your use eg: washing up liquid, loo rolls etc, as well as milk, tea and delicious chocolate cookies. Dogs are made very welcome with their own blankets to use and welcome treats. Its location is perfect for walking and trips to the coast and surrounding countryside. The Bridge Inn does excellent meals. 2 doors away is Jackson’s butcher that do breakfast rolls (egg & bacon etc), takeaway meals and a freshly cooked pork pie is a must.

Apart from having problems with signal on television we found the whole experience very enjoyable and a good location.

from the first minute we arrived was greeted by unfriendly niehbours who did not like the fact we was just unpacking the luggage it was exactly the same when leaving the property.

parking was a major problem as i am disabled and find it very difficult to walk any distance. the so called spar next door to the cottage was practically empty of any kind of groceries. this is not a property for disabled or elderly as the bathroom is as far away from the bedroom as you could imagine,so at night was a nightmare.

Beautiful cottage in a quiet area just outside Whitby, easy walk to Whitby by the railway line and river or the train station is literally just down the road.

Well equiped and really cosy, clean and comfortable. Despite previous reviews the parking was'nt a problem we unloaded at the side and parked just a little down the road round a corner and did'nt move the car again. Welcome basket and treats for the dogs made it just perfect. Thank you, we will be back

The cottage was well equipped and clean and tidy but the parking was a nightmare.

We had to park a long way from the cottage up a very steep hill. Definitely not suitable for an elderly couple. There was no mention in the adverts from Sykes that it was not suitable for elderly or disabled.

A very comfortable little dwelling, convenient to explore the local area.

Parking is a bit of a problem but space is usually available nearby.

While initially there was a bit of a stumbling block, Iain and Julie rushed to make everything right and were generous and gracious hosts.

The cottage was the perfect place to stay for a special trip with my dog and we were not only comfortable but found it to be the perfect spot to explore the surrounding areas. The breakfast sandwiches next door were also excellent! We followed some wonderful suggestions from the owners which made our trip even more special. Overall a beautiful cottage, would highly recommend, welcome gifts on arrival which is a nice touch, only gripe I have is it should say there is a charge for dogs as it bumped my price up by £60,

Property was as described and very comfortable.

Some Prosecco and other goodies left for us which was a nice touch. Depending on when you arrive/depart you’ll either need to unload in the butchers car park or if that’s closed, in the side road but it is quite busy so you need to be quick. Once we parked up we used the train to get to Whitby or we walked in along the path that runs alongside the railway line (takes about 30 mins). Road outside it quite busy but we soon got used to it so it was no problem. I did feedback to the owners that a privacy curtain would be useful on the back door as you have to pass it to get from the bathroom to upstairs. There is a curtain on the front door. A lovely cottage in a lovely setting and a really good alternative in price to actually staying in Whitby.

A fantastic little cottage, that had everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible, the owners communicated with us, to ensure we knew how to access the property and if we needed anything, they had left welcome packs with treats, even for the dog, going the extra mile, ensyred a great start to our holiday.

The property was lovely and just perfect for me and my husband and our two pooches.

The owners thought of everything from treats for us to treats for the dogs. They even left bubble bath which I always forget. The main bedroom was lovely and quite quirky. The baby gate was handy for keeping the dogs from going upstairs or for keeping them in the kitchen at bedtime. Good enclosed garden but not suitable if your dog is a jumper, ours safely stayed within the garden and greeted everyone who went by. We took a big waterproof blanket for the living room as a preventative measure. The rug is cream so we found it was helpful at avoiding any marks on the rug. The owner also provided dog blankies which we found were useful for keeping things protected. We would stay again. Lovely walk to Whitby and lots to do in the surrounding areas.
