Bute Cottage

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Bute Cottage and would definitely return.

We were a family of seven, and the cottage was comfortable, spacious, and well-equipped, with plenty of room for everyone. Having two separate sitting areas and a games room , all with TVs, meant adults and children could relax in their own space. We enjoyed eating at the large kitchen and Patio tables. The enclosed front and rear gardens were perfect for our small dogs, giving us peace of mind, and the beautiful views made it a lovely place to unwind. A useful points for future guests are that upstairs is accessed by quite a steep staircase with a smaller step at the top. There are three double bedrooms, one with an en-suite. The en-suite bedroom is accessed through the family bedroom, which sleeps three with a bunk bed and a single bed. The main family bathroom is downstairs. Lockton is an excellent base for exploring the Yorkshire coast and surrounding countryside. We enjoyed walks straight from the cottage, including a woodland walk to Levisham for a fantastic meal at the village pub. The village cafe is also well worth a visit. Overall, Bute Cottage is a spacious, dog-friendly holiday home in a beautiful location, and we wouldn't hesitate to stay again. We really enjoyed our stay.

A delightful cottage, tastefully decorated with plenty of space inside and out.

The large garden is a particular feature of the property with fabulous views across the countryside. The outside areas are particularly well maintained giving a charming country cottage feel. We enjoyed sitting on the glorious patio surrounded by summer flowers. Lockton is a pretty, peaceful village.

It was a lovely cottage in a great location.

Plenty of spaces to sit and relax. The outside area and garden were fantastic. The beds were very comfortable but at least one of the pillows only had the one clean pillowcase. I think a pillow protector is important. My double room needed side tables on both sides of the bed. I took the one from the other double room for the week and then replaced it. It was generally clean but the television table was dusty near the back(ie a cursory wipe had been done) and the skirtings in the kitchen definitely needed attention. The modern units in the utility were much better than the kitchen ones because they smelt a bit damp. There was too much half used left over food in one cupboard, some out of date which I threw. On the whole I would return especially if these few minor issues were addressed.

The property was gorgeous, spotless, beds were comfy, and the garden was wonderful.

However, the property doesn't feel well big enough or well equipped for the number of adults it advertises, especially if there are also babies or young children in the group. Luckily as the weather was so nice we were able to eat outside all the time, but we would have really struggled to get 7 adults and 3 babies around the dining table if we'd had to eat inside. The space to prepare food and wash and dry dishes for a large group was a challenge, and the fridge was much too small for trying to fit the food for a large group for a long weekend. If we'd been staying for a week we couldn't have fit our groceries in the fridge. Two of the bedrooms (the bunk room and the en-suite bedroom) also run directly on to each other and that isn't advertised in the listing, so the single bed in the bunk room isn't really useable if you're a group of separate adults rather than one large family who don't mind sharing rooms. The door into that bunk room also doesn't close all the way. The noise also travels particularly well through the house, which I appreciate can be unavoidable in an old cottage but is definitely something to note if you're a mixed group with children or people going to bed at different times - if there are children asleep upstairs you can't make any noise downstairs without waking them up as you can hear everything through the floors. As the second bathroom is an en-suite there also ends up being a bit of a queue for the toilet and showers. Finally, we couldn't get the wifi to work. We had a really lovely time in the house, but I wouldn't stay again in a large group.

A really lovely cottage with lots of room in different spaces and a great garden/paddock, which sadly we didn’t really get to enjoy fully because of the weather which.

was a shame, the dogs loved it though! There was everything you’ll need for a comfortable relaxing stay and plenty to do locally, tea room is a must visit. The downstairs shower was a bit hit and miss with temperature control and having a larger party it would definitely benefit from a dishwasher also maybe somewhere to hang coats as well. Overall loved it and definitely recommend.

We loved our stay at Bute Cottage.

It was clean, had multiple living/dining spaces and allowed us to really spread out. The games room was a great addition and the games available gave us some great family evenings. We found the shower temperature difficult to navigate but it didn’t hinder anything and we have a fab stay. Will be back for sure!

The accommodation was beyond all my expectations.We would have been helped if there were some instructions on how to turn on the hot water.

We all loved our stay in your beautiful historic cottage.

We had a great time exploring the area. However, our feedback to help the owner: Oven needed a clean and cooking trays replaced. Lovely walled garden at rear was let down by the poor state of the garden furniture. The play room TV and CD player did not work, this was disappointing as we have 4 young children.

Lovely property in quite village location.

Property and Rooms were large an well furnished. Great for large family like us. Ample parking. Lovely walks and views straight from the door. And a nice tea room in the village. I Wasn’t sure after booking after seeing comments about master bedroom and shower room being through family room but it worked out really well as the 4 teenagers took the 2 rooms and bathroom while the 2 couples took the other bedrooms and downstairs bathroom. The kitchen was well equipped with a family table that seated all of us but some milk in the fridge would have been a nice welcome touch. There are 3 lounges each with a smart tv in each so everyone could have space and good wi fi essential when travelling with 6 gen Z’s the teenages liked the snug and we spent a lot of time here watching movies and playing some of the board games which were provided. It was surprising how difficult children’s charades were. As we could log in to our normal streaming accounts on the tv’s we had no issues with reception but even when watching normal had no issues. The garden is split between a walled seating area and large grassed paddock. The paddock was lovely and would be great for games it does have a pond fenced and a hedge around it but there were sheep next door and some small gaps to the neighbours garden so we didn’t feel secure letting our dog out without being well supervised- he did say hello to the neighbour once. This was a bit of a shame as a gate on the walled seated area would have been great and allowed us to relax a little more when out. It we still used the garden lots but had it felt more secure would probably have upped our rating. There’s loads to do locally and we used the area as a jumping off spot for the cost and moors and had a great time as well as just being around the house relaxing. Pickering had great local amenities and is about 10 minutes away. One gripe as a dog owner I like to leave the property well cleaned and the vacuum was missing a section from the wand so it was very short and difficult to use, took ages to go round and gave me back ache-invest in a better hoover and visitors are more likely to help you out and use it. We would definitely go back

We enjoyed our stay in the cottage which we found to be warm, clean and comfortable.

It had all we needed for our stay. The gardens are pretty, full of flowers and there is loads of outside space for children to play and dogs to run. The cottage is situated in lovely village with friendly locals and has a good cafe for breakfasts and/or lunch or both!

The property was a beautiful cottage in a lovely location a very pretty village .

& a beautiful garden , however the previous tenants hadn’t cleared away dog hair which was everywhere in some places 2” thick & there’d been a problem with cleaning . We spent a long time cleaning ! The owner did recompense us ,but I suffered from asthma all week. The listing DID NOT mention that the stairs are like a ladder & anyone with mobility issues wouldn’t get up them Also the main bedroom en-suite was accessed thro the bunk room who's door doesn’t close . This caused issues with the children in our party . On the whole it was sad the place hadn’t been cleaned as it spoilt what could have been a restful week

Perfect place for walking and escapes to the seaside. Cottage offers lots of space for a family. We had a great time. Thank you.

The property was absolutely beautiful!

The gardens were really well kept (I had serious plant envy!) and loads of outdoor space for the dog and children to enjoy. Lots of indoor spaces for everyone to enjoy their own space. I think it would benefit from extractor facilities in the kitchen and bathrooms but we appreciate that isn’t always feasible in an older property. It was comfortable, clean and truly felt like a home from home. The neighbours were very friendly and helpful too. Thank you! We’d love to return at some point and definitely recommend.

The cottage is lovely in the face of it, however there were serious issues with damp inside.

The extractor fan in the en suite didn’t work, and there was significant black mould on one of the windows in that bathroom. After leaving, we discovered that our dog’s food mat and cooling mat had become covered in mould during our stay. Especially concerning is that one of the members of our group has a chronic illness impacting their lungs, so the damp environment was a real health concern. Less serious issues with cleanliness were in the en suite & its bedroom - bathroom mirror was filthy and the pillowcases were badly stained with makeup. A broken glass had been left on the kitchen side when we arrived, and there was rubbish from previous guests left on the side tables in the living room. It’s a real shame as the cottage is gorgeous to look at, and the gardens are stunning. The village is beautiful, and highly recommend the tea rooms down the road.

Lovely home annd beautiful garden.

The cottage has jall the essentials. Perfect location for exploring all that is available nearby. Bathrooms slightly tricky to manage with two families sharing but worked ok for a short break. I would definitely recommend this property to others

The Cottage was situated in a lovely village and was a good size for our party, the beds were comfortable, but I think guests should be made aware that one of the double bedrooms is located through the bedroom with the bunkbeds and this may not be suitable for their needs and the only bathroom upstairs is in that double room.

The waste bin in one of the bedrooms had not been emptied and we also found items in draws left by previous guests, so obviously they had been missed. The cottage was not as clean as I would have hoped, lots of areas had been neglected, and tables etc. hadn’t been dusted there were stains on the carpets that could easily have been removed. The bathrooms where fine although I don’t think they had been moped and in the kitchen the cooker looked like it had never been cleaned and the grill only had one element working, so cooking a nice meal for the family was not an option. There were lots of DVDs and a dvd player buy unfortunately it could not be connected to the tv as they weren’t compatible, so it could not be used. The cottage was also full of flies when we arrived and took a while to get rid of, I appreciate we were in the country but we have never known this to happen before. Bute cottage is a great place to stay, I think is just needs more attention to detail, so your future guests can enjoy their stay. I hope you will take on board my comments.

We went to Bute Cottage for a week, and it was exactly as you would expect a lovely old cottage to be.

All rooms were very clean, with fresh linen and towels and plenty of spares. The beds were very comfortable, and my mother in law said it was the best she’s slept in years! It was decorated with beautiful pictures of country scenery and animals, and felt very homey and welcoming. There was a log burning fire with a basket of kindling, that toasted us in the evenings. There were welcome biscuits, which was a nice touch, and tea bags and some spices and cooking essentials in the cupboards. There were plenty of eco friendly cleaning supplies, so we were able to keep the place clean as the week went on. It was about a 40 min drive to York, and about 20-30 mins to Whitby and Scarborough. It was such a brilliant distance away from so many lovely towns, we barely managed to fit everything in as there was so much we could do! The cottage location itself was beautiful, in the peaceful country village with no noise but birds and the occasional cockerel crow. The lockbox for the key took us a moment to find, and we had to turn the central heating and hot water on at the boiler, but these were things we figured out fairly quickly and shouldn’t pose a problem for guests. It may be beneficial to explain where these things are located beforehand, in case some guests do struggle to find them. As an old cottage, it gets pretty cold, but the central heating works well and there are plenty of blankets and throws around. We don’t have a dog, but it seemed very pet friendly as we noticed a large, soft dog bed upstairs. I thought the value for the week was really good! Considering you’re getting a whole cottage with plenty of space, you can go as a larger family, or a couple of smaller families and split the cost. I would definitely recommend, and would go again!

Bute cottage is a lovely comfortable cottage, we did enjoy our stay and has a wonderful Christmas.

The shower pressure and temperature in both bathrooms were not great at all. Lack of dishwasher was also a shame but we knew this would be the case when booking. If possible it would be a nice addition to the cottage for many families particularly when at full capacity. Beds were very comfortable and the cottage was lovely and warm. The main reason for the 3 stars is the level of noise you can hear from all of the upstairs bedrooms. You can hear people talking at a very normal noise level and can hear the kettle boiling and smallest of noises from upstairs. It made it very hard to get to sleep or stay asleep. With the cottage at full capacity it’s hard to keep minimal noise down so made it hard for children to get to sleep. For this reason we would not recommend Bute cottage for families.

The villagers and in particular the next door neighbour were all very friendly. Lovely tea shop. We hope to be back next year!

Apart from that everything was excellent.

Lovely old cottage furnished and decorated in lovely traditional country style, 2 bathrooms a real bonus and more than adequate rooms for our party.

Lovely comfortable beds too. Couldn’t fault the place and the village location was beautiful a perfect base for exploration Yorkshire. Would definitely book again when staying in Yorkshire.

Had the most amazing stay at Bute cottage.

The exterior of the cottage is breathtakingly pretty and the rear garden is superb. Outside patio area with pagoda was the perfect place to sit and relax. The cottage has everything you could need and the choice of three lounges that was very useful for us as we took parents so they could watch tv of their choice and we could chill in another room. The kitchen is well equipped and we enjoyed cooking meals and eating together. We visited the Lockton Tea rooms several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Trips to Whitby, Scarborough, Thornton le dale, Pickering, Malton and Goathland were brilliant and the cottage is the ideal central location. Our two spaniels enjoyed the local walks and the farmer even allowed us access to his farm fields to walk the dogs. I don’t know if I’m allowed to mention names but I would like to say a special thank you to the neighbour Gill for some plants she gave me and also Geoff who was absolutely wonderful to us. We were so taken with this beautiful cottage, location and the neighbours that we have already booked to go again next year. I really can’t wait as I had the most amazing holiday.

All really lovely and had a very nice stay with daughters and grandchildren Would definitely stay again Been picky patio could have done with a sweep and smell inside around fridge area This didn’t spoil our stay like I say we all loved the cottage and garden xx

Lovely cottage in a quiet village.

Kitchen well equipped, fridge needs a new shelf as one in there is missing a leg, great games in the games room particularly enjoyed kids against maturity! Beds very comfortable! Pasture at the bottom of garden great for the dogs! Only slight downside for us was no heating when we arrived as the boiler was turned off but owner talked us through how to turn it on would have been useful for the log burner to have been prepared for our arrival , a radio would be useful also. Could not find a hairdryer so unsure if there was one. Cottage in a great location handy for Pickering, Whitby and Scarborough around 20 mins away. Loved the cottage and would book again if we return to this part of Yorkshire.

Although the cottage was generally clean, it was a little disappointing to find the washing up (presumably from the previous client) still in the dish rack when we arrived in the late evening.

Also, the log fire seemed to be ready to use but had no fire lighters, only an empty box, or dry wood in the log basket. Apart from these minor problems we had a pleasant stay.

Chesterfield style sofas dusty and dirty , debris under cushions,vacuuming and wipe down needed before use.

Kettle very dirty, hence purchased descale before use.Due to having to give access to neighbours, only able to park 2 cars, although it says ample parking.Needs mind your head on doorway to rear bedroom.Nèeds instructions for tvs central heating and appliances.Would be good to be able to access from front door, and also lock easily.Need to tell guests to park beyond next doors wooden gates, as this is their access , hence only able to park 2 cars, although says ample parking.Shower in en suite very low pressure, hence had to use downstairs bathroom.Floodlight to rear garden would be good,had to use torches.Driveway very muddy as we went in March.Scaffolding etc in drive meant reduced parking.Could do with more wardrobe space. Bed in rear bedroom as a bad squeak. Sorry would not return.

Beautiful cottage, very well maintained.

Enjoyed a lovely weekend for my wife's 40th, with our 7 children. Was frozen outside, but the central heating kept us warm within. Only slight niggle is that we had no way of lighting the lovely log burner in the living room. Everything else was provided, kindling, logs firelighters, and coal, but no flame of any sort to actually start the fire! Managed to get a lighter from a shop so we could use the burner on the second night. Oh, and the flow in the en suite shower was very weak, but did not detract from our very lovely weekend. Top notch!
