BURTON FLEMING
The cottage is located in the picturesque village of Burton Fleming, just five miles from the sea; the village is lovely with a stream running through it and amenities include a local inn, village shop and popular tea rooms as well as an ancient church. Burton Fleming is situated in the heart of the chalk wolds - see the many hares in the fields as they like chalk-soil - there are lots of wonderful walks including one through the local organic farm. A great location for a family holiday that offers plenty of variety, with Strattan House as a truly wonderful base to enjoy it from. Post Office and Village Shop - open every day, stocking a wide range of groceries, general household goods and daily papers. Burton Arms Pub - located at the village crossroads serving lunches and dinners. Butchers shop - also sells pies, cakes, and other local produce, located on Thwing Road, from Stratton House walk back towards crossroads and straight over the shop is on the right. Aunt Sal's Pantry Farm Shop and Tea Room - a traditional farm shop and tea room selling home produce and home cooked food. It is perfectly located for a well-earned break for walkers, hikers, cyclists, bikers and holiday makers, choose from a mouth-watering selection of cakes, pastries, teas, sandwiches, toasties and panini’s. St Cuthberts Church - something from just about every architectural period imaginable, Norman, medieval, Georgian, or Victorian, all piled on top of each other in glorious eclectic style. Village Walk - there is a lovely village walk that runs along a grass path and track through West Field House Farm, during the spring and summer you will see many different wild flowers and grasses in the verges of the fields. Hares, sky larks are common sights (and sounds). If you are lucky you may catch sight of deer or an owl cruising the hedges for food at dusk, the path crosses the path of the Gypsey race at several points. Full details of the walk and a map are provided in the Stratton House information folder for guests. Gypsey Race - the Gypsey Race is a chalk stream that runs through the villages of West Lutton, East Lutton, Helperthorpe, Weaverthorpe, Butterwick, Foxholes, Wold Newton, Burton Fleming, Rudston and Boynton. The stream flows into the North Sea in Bridlington harbour. The Gypsey race rises in the Great Wold Valley through a series of springs, and flows intermittently, according to folklore, when the Gypsey race is flowing, bad fortune is at hand. It flowed in the year before the great plague of 1664, the restoration of Charles II, and the landing of William of Orange.
