Julie “Beautiful house, perfect location with Whitby harbour and Whitby beach just a short walk from the house.”
Scarborough just 40 mins away and regular buses to take you there if you don't have a car. We had the best time, Lavender house was very spacious and comfortable, and equipped with everything we needed. We would definitely recommend and would book again.

Nicola “Lavender house was comfortable, spacious, well equipped, home from home and in a perfect location.”
Great base for our weekend and perfect for a larger group of friends to stay together.
- Nicola, July 2025Ben “This is our 4th time back at Lavender House.”
It's is the perfect location with a couple of minutes walk into the town centre. The house can sleep 10 people and there is still enough space that you don't on top of each other.
- Ben, January 2025Caroline “We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Lavender house over Christmas.”
The property has everything you need and was exceptionally clean. I had a query about whether we would need extra pots, pans and baking trays seeing as we were there over Christmas and the owner got back to me really quickly sending photographs of what was there. There was even a Christmas tree in the living room for us to put our presents under! The location is fantastic, just a 5 to 10 minute walk down the hill and you are in the middle of Whitby. There is not much parking availability on the road but we found spaces to park on the nearby streets (we were a party of 10 and had had three cars between us). When we checked out we were really lucky and spaces were available immediately outside the property. A great time had by all.
- Caroline, December 2024Sarah “Lovely house, with everything we could need, in a great location.”
We had a very comfortable stay, thank you. The only minor niggle was the WiFi was very glitchy, but it didn't spoil the experience.
- Sarah, August 2024Karen “We had a great family holiday at Lavender House.”
The many levels, rooms and stairs made the house very different to home. Definitely not for people who aren't very mobile. The two lounges allowed adults to relax in quite away from small children - the view across to the Abbey and hills opposite were great. The owners were really helpful when I managed to lock the keys in the utility room and even replaced a couple of plates that we discovered were chipped whilst we were there. I was expecting them to sort between visitors. The wine and biscuits etc that were left for us were very much enjoyed. My only minor frustration - which can't be addressed easily, was the lack of work surface when cooking - probably noticeable as with small children the table isn't always easy to use for prep. For us it was well suited for our multi generation holiday.
- Karen, July 2024Debbie “Our stay at Lavender House was Bove expectations, ae were totally delighted with everything.”
Comfort cleanliness and a perfect location for exploring Whitby. Would definitely recommend to anyone to stay, 10/10 Thnk you for making our stay a very pleasurable 1 . 1 tiny thing waa the downstairs toilet light was faulty which didnt impair but didnt impair Our stay .
- Debbie, January 2024Matthew “When we arrived we were greeted by the foul smell from the downstairs toilet, which never went away the whole trip.”
The light in this toilet was also faulty possibly dangerous. There is inadequate waste disposal with just one bin which was full when we arrived and no recycling bin. This meant we had to leave bags of rubbish on top of the already full bin. Some of the showers are not the best. The house was clean on arrival and perfectly functional. Certain things could do with replacing such as mattresses and the oven. Also the wi fi is not good enough for the size of the house. The main problem with the house was the owners charging us nearly ÂŁ200 for forgetting to clean the oven and a broken lamp which was already broken on arrival and could have been easily fixed with 2 screws.
- Matthew, December 2023Alan “Very l good location, had to ring owner as the boiler wasn’t working.”
Very polite and helpful to remedy the situation. Would definitely recommend
- Alan, December 2023Samantha “The property is wonderful, spacious, modern, very clean.”
Great location, with lovely views and the Christmas tree was a lovely addition to make us get in the festive mood. Lovely owners too, very helpful and quick to react! Can't wait to go back next year!! I will be recommending it to all my friends.
- Samantha, November 2023Joanne “A lovely holiday home, Plenty of room for the 10 of us, Everything you would need for a fantastic holiday, The front steps are quite steep, but being able to get in through the back door was a bonus.”
Would definitely return
- Joanne, November 2023Lisa “Lovely house and in a great location!”
Everything we needed was there and the parking wasn't a problem. Would like to go back for Goth Weekend one year.
- Lisa, October 2023Shannon “Beautiful home, very spacious and never short of a toilet even between 10 females!”
Very clean, tidy and welcoming!
- Shannon, October 2023Titus “Lovely stay with plenty of space and an excellent location.”
Couldn’t find the downstairs TV remote though, but the second TV worked fine. Also one or two of the doors had broken handles, and the bath leaked. Minor things though really, a perfect stay for a week in Whitby.
- Titus, August 2023David “Lavender House is the perfect home for a family holiday, there is everything you could possibly need , we went with our grandchildren and sons, plenty of room for the nine of us.”
We absolutely loved it ! Highly recommend. As previous feedback parking is difficult near the property when it is busy.
- David, August 2023Millie “House was lovely in a great place.”
The parking was a nightmare, seems strange that a 10 person house wouldn’t have one designated parking space. The kitchen was a little dirty, and there wasn’t enough glasswear. A bottle of processo was left but there was only 1 prosecco glass and not enough wine glasses for everyone. The welcome pack was also a little disappointing.
- Millie, May 2023Thank you for your comments and feedback. We will replenish the glasses and thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will also check with our cleaner with regard to your comment about the kitchen. With regard to parking, we inform all our guests that parking is on street only and a first come first serve basis. All roads surrounding the property are free to park on. There is a large 24hr car park at the bottom of the hill which is situated 5 minutes from the property. The welcome pack includes a bottle of Prosecco, milk , biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar which are all complimentary and provided by the owners as a thank you. Property Owner
Claire “We were very happy in the property and had a fantastic week in Whitby.”
We feel we must mention that the toilet on the top floor wasn't used because of a nasty smell and obviously needs attention. Also the right hand curtain in the ground floor living room is apt to slide off the runner! But our week wasn't spoiled. Thanks.
- Claire, April 2023Susan “Loved the house and location it had everything we needed for the 8 of us.”
Comfortable clean and extremely spacious. The only downside and it’s a small downside is the mattresses where a little soft for us more mature people and the bath towels were a little small for us larger people. We had a lovely time and would definitely recommend it to others. The complimentary coffee, tea, sugar and biscuits and the bottle of fizz where a lovely touch.
- Susan, March 2023Ben “Another great visit to Lavender house.”
3rd time of visiting for our group now. Really feels like home! 9 of us visited the size of bedrooms, living rooms and kitchen is big enough to accommodate a large group and not to feel over crowed. Will be booking for 2024
- Ben, January 2023Charlotte “Had a few issues with the wifi cutting off/stopping working and the shower in the main bathroom was either freezing cold or boiling hot so was unable to use it during our stay.”
apart from that everything was perfect
- Charlotte, December 2022Graeme “Outstanding house photographs don't do it justice and its location is perfect”
- Graeme, December 2022Jayne “It's a great house plenty of room we stay here for goth weekend last year this year and booked it for next year”
- Jayne, October 2022Anne “Good property for a large group, spacious rooms and 4 bathrooms appreciated.”
Only negative comment lack of recycling bin.
- Anne, October 2022Lisa “We had a fantastic stay, was in such a good location, the hill to get back was fine for most of us but its steep if you have walking difficulties.”
The only thing missing was a radio or speakers to listen to music. Other than that it's a lovely clean place to stay. Looks exactly like the pictures. would recommend to anyone, can't wait to come back
- Lisa, October 2022Joanna “Myself and nine others in my party were very pleased with our stay at lavender house clean cosy had everything you need.”
Close to the centre of Whitby. The local pub is just outside of the back gate. Would definitely go back
- Joanna, September 2022Gillian “This is a beautiful property and from the upper floors there are stunning views across to the Abbey - the evening sunsets and early morning mists were spectacular extras.”
There are also tantalising hints of the harbour below - which might mean you are being dragged from the house to go crabbing before you have unpacked. The house, which is really a home from home, was large enough to accommodate a large, multi-generational family - some members with disabilities and was comfortable and well appointed - there was everything* that was needed and nothing that would be a hindrance. The steep and hilly location may not suit some people with mobility issues, but as for the property, there is the option of ground floor sleeping with showering facilities. Whitby itself was a joy, and though it has taken many years to get there, it will now be a regular destination - the harbour and beaches are stunning, the narrow, winding streets ripe for exploration and the amenities are excellent - you could easily spend a week there with children of all ages and know that there is more to discover when you return. Whilst we love Devon and Cornwall, for us, Whitby is all of that and more, and was easily accessible at considerably less than half the travel time as we live in the North West. Once in Whitby there is no need for a car unless you wish to explore more of the North Yorkshire coast - Robin Hoods' bay and Staithes are close and not to be missed. All in all, a last minute booking that was loved by all and is an absolute keeper.... * The Wi-fi for TV was poor when we were there- but in truth we only tried the TV for an hour one evening so it didn't really matter. Fridge / freezer temp kept altering automatically overchilling some food in the fridge and causing excessive icing in freezer. Parking was OK but, the one time we used the cars meant that when we returned there was no space and we did then have to park a minute or two walk away which wasn't much of a problem but could be a slight issue for some or when you need to pack up.
- Gillian, August 2022Ruth “Beautiful, spacious house in walking distance of central Whitby.”
Super views across to the Abbey. Didn't use the car much all week, as plenty to do locally and access via foot. Lots of room for a large family get-together.
- Ruth, August 2022Josephine “Lovely stay.”
Liked position of house. Great that each bedroom had a bathroom facility. Great kitchen. Beautiful views from lounge. Good facilities. Liked access to laundry room. Some things to address: Mice in pantry area Rather smelly drains in wet room Fans would be good. Top bedroom v hot More lamps needed in main lounge- overhead light v harsh, single lamp v dim Knifes in kitchen v blunt Patio needs some love ( solar lights not working- furniture not v comfy for relaxing. Nothing green) These just listed in spirit of making a great place a superb one. Thanks for a lovely stay.
- Josephine, July 2022Christopher “Had a fantastic weekend away, the property was outstanding couldn’t fault anything.”
Was close to town, but still peaceful where we was situated. The house was super clean and everything there we needed for a weekend away loved it
- Christopher, May 2022David “Lovely house, feels like a home.”
Had everything we needed. Well places to explore both Whitby and also the surrounding moors. Stunning views across Whitby and the Abbey from the lounge. Just be aware that the parking is first come first served, we did always find a space nearby. However, due to the location there were often days we didn’t use the car as we could walk into Whitby and also walk off along the coastal path. Also very close to the train station where the North Yorkshire Railway terminates.
- David, April 2022Paula “Stayed here a few times and we love it .”
It has everything you need really close to town highly recommended there are lovely little touches like bottle of prossecco milk tea coffee suger biscuits i go with the girls from work and have the best time its a lovely place.
- Paula, March 2022Nicholas “Well located house with lots of space.”
Clean and well maintained. Everything worked. Furnishings somewhat basic and not altogether well planned. For example the heavy coffee tables in both sitting rooms were out of reach of people sitting down. But overall a pleasant place to stay.
- Nicholas, February 2022Hannah “Fantastic house, perfect for large family get togethers.”
Perhaps the best large accommodation we have stayed in, everything was thought of. Excellent location, in a quieter part of Whitby, with stunning views of the Abbey. All this, and still within easy walking distance of the town centre.
- Hannah, January 2022Phil “The property is amazing - everything you'd wish for away from home, very comfy beds, and loads of bathrooms.”
It's also in a perfect spot, so quiet, and with views over the Abbey and harbour from the upper bedrooms, but only 10 minutes walking distance of the centre of town. And the mega hill on the return journey burns off any excess calories gained with all the amazing sea food, and real ales that Whitby has to offer.
- Phil, October 2021Lorna “The owners were quick to respond to a couple of issues in the house and were excellent hosts.”
The house was beautiful with great views and lovely furnishings. Only issue was the sofabed which was very uncomfortable unfortunately! Otherwise a brilliant stay and would thoroughly recommend.
- Lorna, August 2021Hilary “Never been to whitby before loved it (apart from the hills).”
Lots for the grandchildren to do and the grownups.
- Hilary, August 2021Caroline “Lavender House is a fabulous place to stay in Whitby.”
Only a few minutes walk to the Swing Bridge, railway station and all of the other amenities in the centre of Whitby. The house is very spacious, well appointed and has plenty of rooms to cater for all visitors - e.g. plenty of lounge space - giving the teenagers on our group their own space to chill out without having to retreat to their bedrooms or have to sit with the oldies! The kitchen is gorgeous with a lovely range cooker and seating for a large family group. It is obvious care has been taken when renovating Lavender House to appeal to all visitors and provide them all with a comfortable holiday home! We will return to Whitby, no doubt about that!
- Caroline, June 2021Kevin “Terrific location near a local butchers, chip shop, convenience store & pub The rear outdoor area was in the sun all day and a real bonus with no breeze.”
Everything was at hand to cook any meal and relax.
- Kevin, May 2021Paula “Really lovely house everything you need views are brilliant from sitting room close to amenity definitely be back this our 2 year here.”
- Paula, March 2020Ben “Stayed at Lavender House in January to celebrate a friends 40th birthday.”
The owners thought of everything for our arrival with nice little touchs with a welcome card, biscuits, milk and a nice bottle of fizz that we used to toast the special occasion. 10 of us shared the house for weekend there was enough communal space to ensure we didn't feel on top of each other. Would recommend watching the sun rise from the middle floor sitting room window. Would absolutely recommend Lavender House and will certainly be booking again. Thank you for making such an occasion extra special.
- Ben, January 2020Carole “Excellent few days away for the New Year.”
The house was beautiful ! The house had everything you needed ,was very well decorated and only a few minutes walk away from town centre. Would have booked for next year but already booked. However already booked for next New Year through Sykes again, can't fault them !!!
- Carole, December 2019Jackie “Excellent location would highly recommend but will definitely book this house again”
- Jackie, November 2019Denise “A few little things like loose doorknobs and light fittings haging loose from the ceilings in some places did nothing to distract from how comfortable, clean and thoughtfully equipped this house was.”
We were a party of 4 couples and all had plenty of space to congregate together or find an area for quiet time. Toilet and shower facilities on each floor meant that the 4 floors were not an issue. The kitchen/diner was our favourite place to hang out having enough room for us all, with great seating area and good cooking facilities. It was lovely and warm and cosy and often had to turn radiators off. What a lovely place to stay if visiting Whitby. Wouldnt hesitate to book again if holidaying in Whitby with the same number of guests.
- Denise, November 2019Amy “The house was absolutely amazing, had everything we needed and more.”
Was comfy, clean and spacious. Only a 5 minute walk into Whitby which was perfect.
- Amy, September 2019Kath “The website was easy to use and enabled us to search for the perfect property to meet our needs.”
Lavender House was beautiful! We have never stayed in a rental property that was as clean and well furnished as this one. The facilities suited our party of 8 (including children) and the owners have thought of everything. The house is only a short walk from the centre of Whitby which meant that we didn’t use the car for days and walked everywhere. A super seaside family holiday was had by all in a fabulous house. Thank you!
- Kath, August 2019Liz “Loved Whitby house was more than we thought it would be plenty of room for ...”

5 minutes and your there . Party of 10 loved it would definitely use again . Great house credit to owner .
- Michael Neil, May 2019Jane “Wonderful house.”
With great views of the Abbey from the front facing rooms on the second and third floor. This house is perfect for a group as there are loads of bathrooms,a massive kitchen table to gather round and two living rooms if the sofa bed is not in use. For the size of the property I thought it was excellent value for money. I would love to go back.

Will definitely come back again.
