Situated in Sandsend's exclusive and beautiful Valley, The Cottage is a truly gorgeous period property with great character and beamed ceilings, offering excellent, very comfortably furnished accommodation.

This enchanting ‘chocolate box’ period cottage is an absolute gem, set in an idyllic location in Sandsend’s exclusive Valley, with glorious views and just a short stroll to the beach.

With great attention to detail, and overlooking the picturesque village green, this pretty beamed cottage includes an orchard and charming gardens and has recently been extended.

Fabulous cottage with beautiful furnishings, the best we have ever stayed in.



Ground Floor

The cottage has an entrance porch, a lovely sitting room with window seat and superb views, flat screen TV, DVD player and gas fired stove. There is charming kitchen with cooker, fridge/freezer and microwave, plus a dining area with seating and views over the rear garden and a cloaks / WC.

First Floor

On the first floor is a smart double bedroom with stunning views across the Valley, the recently refurbished shower room has a shower, WC and hand wash basin.


There are sloping gardens to the front with a seating area, plus a small orchard and a delightful private rear garden with colourful borders, terrace, quality furniture and gas BBQ – perfect for relaxing, sunbathing and enjoying al fresco meals in the summer months.


This property may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.



The Cottage is located in The Valley, Sandsend accessed via a narrow lane off to the left of the road at the bottom of Lythe bank when travelling north, a few yards passed Wits End Café, or alternatively via a pedestrian only pathway from the southern side of the stream.

Browse in the charming Wild Hart near the bridge by the beck; it’s a delightful selection of vintage pieces for the home plus beach-inspired accessories. Wander next door to Serendipity, a charming gift shop which also accommodates The Healing Touch, offering holistic therapies. The well-stocked Sandsend Stores is a must, it sells groceries, deli, fresh bread, dairy, newspapers, postcards, wine, beer and chocolates.

Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way National Trail is a walking route through beautiful landscape and scenery and is one of may nature trails over the cliff paths, attracting not only walkers but surfers and fishing enthusiasts too.


A leisurely 3 mile stroll along the beach leads to the ancient sea port of Whitby, famed for its connections with the explorer Captain James Cook and steeped in history and is packed with antique shops, tea rooms, and all kinds of restaurants.

North Yorkshire Moors National Park

The nearby national park offers superb mountain biking, hiking and horse riding.

North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway

Aboard the steam railway, is the stunning ‘Heartbeat’ heritage coastline to explore, with its quaint fishing villages and smugglers coves.

Between Sandsend and Whitby is a fabulous 18-hole golf course perched on top of the cliff.

The Cottage is located in The Valley, Sandsend accessed via a narrow lane off to the left of the road at the bottom of Lythe bank when travelling north, a few yards past Wits End Cafe.

The property is an end terrace period stone cottage under a pitched pantile roof, with Yorkshire sash windows and attractive part glazed and panelled entry door. The cottage retains a great deal of period charm, with low beamed ceilings, and a steep narrow staircase to the first floor.

The property is conveniently located close to a bus stop and Sandsend’s many amenities – cafes, local inn, restaurant, shops, art gallery, and doctor’s surgery.

Transport to Whitby and Runswick Bay

There is a main bus route, with the bus stop a few hundred yards from the property.


There is no dedicated parking for the property but a car park reserved for those properties within The Valley.  To reach the property from the car park, there is a small wooden bridge over the stream and c. 15-18 steps up to the property.  There is a large council Pay & Display car park to the rear of Wits End Café.

The Cottage is approached by foot over the timber bridge from the car park and then up 21 fairly steep gravelled steps.

The Cottage

To the front is a pleasant paved seating area with views over the valley.

The accommodation is arranged on two floors with the sitting room and dining kitchen on the ground floor, and the bedrooms and shower room on the first floor.

To the rear is a largely flagged garden with three steps up to the main seating area. From there a further five steps lead to the upper area, having wicket gate and side access path.

The Ground Floor

There is an entrance hall with built-in store/cloaks cupboard and low doorway (5ft 9in) to the sitting room.

Sitting Room

The sitting room features a beamed ceiling, exposed stonework, window with fitted window seat overlooking the valley, and a cast iron gas fired stove. There is a doorway to the rear entrance hall, having two steps up to the rear door, and built-in cupboard housing the gas central heating boiler. A further door gives access to the cottage staircase – 11 steps winding back on themselves.

The sitting room contains a two seater sofa, arm chair, padded window seat, coffee table, TV and DVD player. Two steps up to the kitchen.

The Kitchen

The kitchen contains a one-and-a-half bowl sink unit, electric oven and hob, fridge and microwave cooker. The dining area comprises two fitted settles and table. The kitchen is fully equipped with china, glassware, cutlery and cooking implements for the self catering of four people.

First Floor

Bedroom One

With standard double bed, bedside cabinets and wardrobe. Sash window to front and sloping beamed ceiling.

Shower Room

Walk-in shower cubicle – 9in step up, through bi-fold doors, pedestal basin and low level wc. Electric shaver socket


Small paved area with seat – pleasant views over the valley, being west facing and enjoying afternoon and evening sunshine.


York stone paved gardens with borders, providing level seating area having tables and chairs. From the back door there are a total of 8 steps up to the bin storage area and gate to a side access path.

The Cottage is an old property and by its very nature cannot be adapted for the use of wheelchairs and may not be suitable for the very infirm due to the access and layout of the accommodation.
