    “We had a lovely week staying in Field View over New Year.”

    We enjoyed New Year’s Eve in the Bridge Inn. Great to be able to walk into Whitby and lovely days out in Scarborough and Robin’s Hood Bay. The dogs enjoyed the garden and I am sure it would be nice to use the summer house in warmer months. It was great to have the extra fridge/freezer and washer and dryer in the outside shed. The village was quite busy, so the dedicated parking space at the railway sidings was greatly appreciated, although walking up the hill to the house in the icy ...

The village was quite busy, so the dedicated parking space at the railway sidings was greatly appreciated, although walking up the hill to the house in the icy weather was a challenge! The house listing was accurate regarding both sets of very steep twisting stairs that were difficult. We did cook at the house and the kitchen was generally well equipped with ample crockery and cutlery, however, it would benefit from having some decent cereal bowls! The weather turned extremely bad at the end of the week and it was nice that the owners made contact to check if we were okay. Whitby 1.5 miles; Sandsend 2.5 miles, Robin Hood's Bay 6 miles.

Situated just 1.5 miles inland from Whitby, the small village of Ruswarp lies on the River Esk, with old stone cottages lining the main street. Ruswarp has excellent amenities, including a local pub with hand-pulled real ales, a village shop and a renowned local butcher. The Esk Valley Walk runs through the village, and it is an easy 25 minute walk to the centre of Whitby. Ruswarp has a regular bus service, and the single track railway has regular steam trains running through! Enjoy an hour’s boating on the river, or feed the local ducks. Arguably the most historic landmark in Ruswarp is the brick-built viaduct. It once supported the main Scarborough to Whitby line. The viaduct is 120 feet high and when it was built it took more than five million bricks to complete. The viaduct was closed in 1965. The viaduct is now known as the cinder track, a walk/cycleway along the former Whitby-to-Scarborough railway line. A perfect location for exploring the surrounding coastline and the dramatic North York Moors.
