Fantastic location, lovely cottage for 2 of us, well equipped and a fair price

Lovely quirky cottage, that has made the most of the small spaces, kitchen well equipped (but no microwave) and nice place to sit and eat in the corner of the living room.

The yard was a bonus as it was very hot and very busy when we stayed and we could retreat to this quiet outdoor space away from the busy beach and village when we wanted to. There is a reliable bus service up and down the coast and we caught the bus to Staithes and walked back to Sandsend along the Cleveland Way and also walked into Whitby and back during our stay.

Cottage is beautiful with lovely outside space to enjoy the sun. Very comfortable and clean in a great location (next to beach, pub and cafés). The owner is at the end of the phone if you have any problems, very happy to help. We love the place.

There were a lot of good things about the cottage.

The location was excellent, the information provided was useful, it was generally very well appointed and the kids really appreciated having Netflix. Unfortunately a few things let it down, the major one being the beds. They were so uncomfortable. The double was really rickety, this meant any time either of us moved it woke the other up (husband tightened it with some Alan keys he found). The mattress was really awful. I actually ended up sleeping on my yoga mat on the floor. The bunk beds are only really suitable for younger children as there's not enough clearance for them to sit up. Mine are teenagers but the tallest is only 5ft5. My daughter banged her head so many times. The upshot of this was that the kids didn't really have their own space to hang out (important for teenagers). We were also concerned about the fact that that there is no escape route from upstairs in case of fire. The bedroom window pivots in the middle when opened not leaving enough room. Both downstairs escape routes are both through the lounge so if the fire is there you'd be in trouble. In addition the drains in the bathroom were really smelly, leaving a constant odour downstairs. The recycling was also full to the brim when we arrived and wasn't emptied all week. Also, more that two toilet rolls for the whole week, spare bin liners and a couple of spare towels wouldn't have gone a miss considering how much we paid for this cottage. Overall the cottage could be great, it just needs a few things sorting out.

Pros: across road from the beach, next to a pub, fish and chips 1minute away, cosy, cute little cottage located in a lovely area.

Good Wi-Fi and smart tv. Well equipped. Cons: parking! We arrived on a busy, sunny Friday and literally could not park within a mile of the cottage! As it quietened off during the week nearest parking was a few minutes walk away. Also no freezer or freezer section in the fridge. We wanted ice for our drinks! Bit of a whiff coming from the wet room (acetone-y smell). Overall we enjoyed our stay, lovely being right on the beach!

This is my third visit, second time with 2 grandchildren.

They love it - and we're sure to be back!

Beautiful, clean, comfortable cottage in a fabulous location (right next to the beach, close to cafes, restaurant and pub).

Definitely had the holiday/beach feel. Wonderful outdoor area where we enjoyed coffees and wine. The dog was very comfortable and safe as this was an enclosed area and she too enjoyed many hours sunbathing outside on her cushion. We will definitely book again. Thank you for a great holiday.

Second time we’ve visited the cottage - great location .

Only downside this time was the cleanliness wasn’t great previous occupants picnics under the sofa cushions . There was no tea towel or oven gloves has to use dirty beach towel or kitchen roll (not ideal ). To improve the cottage it definitely needs more storage or drying hooks maybe behind the doors or in the shower room . There was a broken chair outside with the patio furniture & the washing line could be more user friendly & maybe a surply of pegs so we could dry the washing . We had some wet weather which made it difficult to dry all our gear out . We love Sandsend & the cottage so do hope these areas can be addressed as we love to visit again . Please pass on this information to the owners .

Yes definitely We arrived on tge 19th May 15.

00 and departed the next day at 0600am. The reason for this and the low marks was the cleanliness and maintenance of the property. We have spoken with the owner and this is now in the hands of Sykes Cottages. We have placed a complaint to Sykes Cottages and awaiting a phone call. Hopefully not to long

The cottage was lovely. Just some feedback that I thought you might appreciate. There were no hooks or no back of door hook in bathroom, so had to put clothes on the floor, which was mostly wet, due to the shower. Also, some essential hand liquid in the bathroom and some washing up liquid and anti bac spray to keep everything clean, would have been nice. We had to leave everything dirty until the next day when we got to the shops. It is just these little things that add to your stay and we don’t have to think about. The cottage was in a great location next to the beach and you really can’t beat that!

We've stayed in Sandsend a few time now and Stonewall is a great little cottage in a fabulous location, no doubt about that.

There were a few cobwebs here and there, but that's spiders for you and it didn't detract from our stay. I was a little disappointed about the woodburner... we have open fires, so know how to operate them, but on arrival it looked like someone had half-cleaned the fire out and left in a hurry as the metal bucket with the ash in was still without it's lid in front of the fire instead of outside, and there was no kindling/sticks logs or firelighters, which was a shame, especially as the heating is a little ineffective in the lounge hidden behind the sofa. I found the logs outside but with no kindling or firelighters we were scuppered. We struggled to get normal TV or Freesat as well, but that was probably more about me than the controls, and we don't go away to watch TV anyway, so no great loss. Overall we had a great stay and the cottage was lovely. Thanks.

Loved our week stay at Stonewall!

Great location close to beach, Hart Inn, Fish Cottage and Mary’s - our first stay here even though we know the area well. Wood supplied for fire, kitchen compact but well equipped and listing does say no microwave. The towel radiator does work on the boost as described but never gets hot so bathroom in February was a little chilly. Rest of the house toasty, comfortable and we felt at home. Slightly lower score for cleanliness for 2 reasons. Looked for plugs in main bedroom for hair dryer and they are behind the drawers so difficult to access unless I missed easier ones and it’s been a good while since it was cleaned there. There were no bins to be found externally so difficult to follow the recycle request. I did manage to meet the bin man who waited while I took the bags to his bin lorry. This is picky as we loved our stay so just raising awareness. We walked miles and always love our visits to Sandsend and would re book. (Thank you for the hosepipe and shoe rack which helped us to keep the dog clean and house tidy!) Previous reviews mention welcome cake… ?

Enjpoyed our stay but their was a few issues with the cottage.

The tap in the kitchen sink had a nasty drip which was no problem to us but it would help to ramp up the water bill. The cooker appeared to be quite greasy. Had to remove some leafuelves and sludge from the drains outside because it was flooding slightly. More than an adiquate supply of fuel and found the cottage warm and cosy with a perfect aspect..THANKYOU

Another excellent trip to this lovely cottage - will book again!

I had the impression that it is damp inside the house (downstairs only).

The firewood was not provided. Parking was a bit tricky, especially on busy weekends no space near without having to pay. Very near to the beach although dogs are not allowed until a bit further.

Lovely cottage ideally located just 100m from the beach and near to a very good, friendly local.

I'll be booking this again soon.

Lovely cottage.

Perfect for our family of 4 and the dog. Very clean and tidy, less than 2 min walk to the beach. The kids loved the nautical theme and the little touches including toy basket, games, kids books. Loved sitting in the sun on the patio and next to the log burner in the evening. Would also recommend the pub next door. Wish we could have stayed longer!

We have stayed there twice before And received a welcome pack but not this time?

We noticed that heating was turned down and on for only a short period? The bathroom towel rail wasn’t working, but overall we enjoyed our stay and would book again,

We loved our stay and the cottage was well situated and equipped.

We did however find the cottage cold as there didn’t seem to be downstairs heating apart from making up the log burner.

The cottage is in a good position relative to the beach and the few shops and the pub.

It’s warm and comfortable with a plentiful supply of logs for the stove. The cottage is small , more suitable for one or two people. Wi-Fi and mobile reception were excellent throughout the week I stayed. The kitchen is very small but has most things you would need. However there is no freezer or freezer compartment/ice box, just a fridge. There’s also no microwave. There’s a lovely shower room (no bath) with underfloor heating. Note that if you’re looking for the washing machine it’s in the shower room under the sink in the cupboard. As noted with other reviews parking is a challenge. There is no parking at the cottage itself. The cottage could benefit from curtains or blinds at the lounge window to offer some privacy as it is easy to see in from the outside. I slept well despite the the two storms that hit the are. The main bedroom is nice and comfortable. There’s a second smaller bedroom with bunk beds. To the front of the cottage is a small enclosed garden, there’s a useful hosepipe for washing down dogs and boot cleaning. Overall I enjoyed my stay.

A lovely cosy cottage in the heart of Sandsend.

We had a lovely stay and the cottage is located in a beautiful area. The cottage has everything you need for a short break.

We arrived on friday 20th october, which was not a good drive due to the storm, but we qas so impressed to arrive, to biscuit and a cake, plus facilities to make a warm cuppa.

The cottage has a cosy feel, and had everything we needed as a family,who brought a dog along. Will be back again. Only a short drive to whitby or for those willing a nice walk. Thank you for making our holiday perfect.

We enjoyed our stay and found the cottage comfortable Arrived late afternoon and found the cottage very cold.

The heaters were off and attempted a contact number to gain some knowledge on programing the heaters to warm up but got no responce.Finally got the stove going and managed to warm through.Found half a stale loaf in a cupboard.Kitchen shelf unit inside corner unit was broken and a window lock in bathroom was loose. Otherwise everything else was very good.

The cottage was beautiful perfect for our stay near the beach for our dog walks would definitely book again thank you Lou and Tracey and doggy Blu

The bed in the double room was very uncomfortable as you could feel the bed frame under the mattress.

We also appreciate it is a tight space to put a double bed but it would’ve better without the frame at the end of the bed as you can’t stretch your legs without hurting your toes on the frame it would also be easier to get out of the bed by opening up the space at the bottom of the bed. The mirror in the bathroom was surrounded by cobwebs and spiders, the dining area could do with a lick of paint due to wear and tear and there needs to be a curtain in the lounge as the window faces the pub car park and you have to walk across the lounge to the downstairs bathroom in the night. The cottage is cute but much if the furniture is style over substance for practical use. Also four mugs for up to four guests? One mug had a huge crack in it, also no teapot.

Location of cottage is great for beach, pub etc Very cosy, was ideal for us and our two 6 year granddaughters.

They loved it and would happily return.

We enjoyed the location of the property.

Parking can be a bit of a problem sometimes it was a little way from the property, we were lucky my husband was speaking to the lady next door and she kindly let us park on her drive as she wasnt using it but if you have mobility problems it might be a problem. It was quite tight to get to the property between two buildings as we have a larger vehicle. It would be useful to have a folder with how to use appliances and heating and useful local phone numbers for vets doctors , nearest hospital and places to eat also the door frames are quite low my husband caught his head twice smaller than i was expecting. Just across the road from the beach and cafe and also good pub next door which serves good food

Beautiful little cottage, perfectly located in Sandsend.

The owner of this cottage definitely wants its guests to feel at home, providing all the essentials (including cookies on arrival).

Freezer box and microwave would have added to the experience

Lovely comfortable cottage in a perfect location for the beach.

Nice welcome gift of cake and biscuits on arrival and everything we needed for our stay. Very clean and tidy and nicely decorated . Lovely having a log burner as the temperature dropped in the evenings. Property is ideal for families with older kids as there isn’t a bathtub, most younger children I know don’t like to shower but for older kids and adults there is a good wet room to wash off all that sand. Good Wi-Fi signal on ground floor but weaker signal upstairs which wasn’t a problem. Our dog loved having his own outdoor space which was a bonus for us and one of the reasons we booked this property. All in all we had a great stay and wouldn’t hesitate going back to Stonewall.

Delightful cosy cottage right next to the beach.

All very clean and well furnished. The wood burner was much appreciated in the cold February evenings as was the Hotel Chocolate velvetiser! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the future.

Very cosy cottage just perfect for our stay over Christmas.

Plenty of wood for the wood burner and heating in bedrooms. Great for dogs as the beach is across the road. Pub next door that serves great food. We will definitely be back.

Delightful cottage.

Many pluses, but especially the shower/toilet with underfloor heating and superb shower, and the generous log fires. So well located for beach and seaside cafes and pub. Downside is parking - which not a problem for us out of season. Bring your own toaster.

A beutifully presented cottage perfectly situated near the beach.

Loved the log fire with adiquate supply of logs.The bathroom was lovely and warm most of the time.Lots of games available for adults and children.Would have preferred more information regarding electrical gadgets i.e oven etc.Missed a toaster and microwave.All in all though,was a very enjoyable holiday and will definately recommend.Have already rebooked for next year.

Amazing holiday property, beautiful location!

Absolutely beautiful cottage very comfortable and really enjoyed staying perfect for the beach and a good base for the area the facilities around ie:- pubs, chip shops and cafes were all very good quality The only thing was the parking sometimes it was a bit away from the cottage and had to pay if you couldn't find a spot Also could do with some information on how to use some of the equipment in the cottage ie:- fire, washer, chocolate maker if there was I couldn't find it

Stonewall is a very charming, cosy and comfortable little cottage.

My husband and me couldn't fault it, we absolutely loved staying here. Sandsend itself was lovely, with a lovely cliff walk and very good beaches. We was originally going to stay in Whitby but so glad we didn't. The only downside was, we had to leave, we will definitely be coming back to Stonewall in the future.

Lovely, clean accommodation.

One of the best equipped cottages we have stayed in, everything had been thought of. Perfect location for the beach, just across the road which made it ideal for us with a 3 year old. Wish we could have stayed longer, will definitely return.
