Valerie “Absolutely fabulous house and location.”
Everything you could wish for. Just one bed was a bit hard according to one of the guests, otherwise everything was was perfect. Thank you!
- Valerie, August 2024Emma “We loved this property and the break away altogether!”
! We booked for the house alone and then were pleasantly surprised with all that there was to do around us! As expected the house is well lived in, but this made us more relaxed to be honest. Perfect for a large family getaway, there was nothing we didn’t have!
- Emma, July 2024Elaine “Thwaitefield is a lovely house, perfect for our family, with lots of space.”
It is well equipped and ideally positioned within the village of Goathland. With easy access to beautiful countryside and the coast. Very sad to see that apparently this property is being removed from the holiday rental market. We would most likely have booked to stay there again
- Elaine, April 2024Rob “-On arrival electric gate didn’t work we had to use a key to get in should have been checked before we arrived -Not enough fridge space for food and was dirty on arrival so had to clean first .”
.for the amount of people to use ( larder fridge would be good in the utility -Coming to stock up wine cabinet/ fridge very dirty and broken
- Rob, December 2023Elaine “We found Thwaitefield to be clean and well appointed.”
With a superb kitchen/diner, plenty of places to relax or play games, comfortable bedrooms and a big secure garden, it was perfect for our mixed aged group, ranging from two to seventy five. We really enjoyed our week finding some lovely walks and interesting places to visit. We would definitely like to return.
- Elaine, October 2023Tim “We enjoyed our stay and appreciated the substantial space available.”
. Everything was as described and in good order. We much appreciated the games room for table football and table tennism, and that recycling facilities for plastic and other waste was available. However we found the directions were not very helpful and accurate. It would be better if they named the side road down which you have to turn to reach Thwaitefield and make clear the entrance is opposite a car park. The keypad entry system for the double gates was not working when we arrived but a remote fob was quickly provided which we used. We were not aware however if the key pad was fixed during our week stay. We also felt there was insufficient toilet paper available for the 10 of us when we arrived so bought some rolls the day after arriving.
- Tim, September 2023Jeremy “The property was perfect for three families, covering three generations, including five boys aged 8 to 15, with plenty of space (and bathrooms!”
) so that there was no feeling of being crowded. Since one of the party is a wheelchair user, being able to have the sofa bed in the snug was perfect, combined with the ground-floor bathroom and the accessibilty of all ground-floor rooms. It would, however, have been even better if a ramp (either permanent or portable) had been available at one of the external doors, so that he could have gone to and from the garden independently. I first stayed at "Thwaitefield" in 1950 when it was a private hotel and on and off for many years after that until 1963. There have obviously been many positive additions and alterations since then, but the character of the original house has been maintained. Happy memories, then and now!
- Jeremy, August 2023Richard Francis “Exceedingly comfortable holiday-let, set in magnificent grounds and in fantastic rural setting.”
Generous rooms, conservatory complete with football and snooker games in the event of inclement weather, well equipped throughout, beautifully maintained, piping hot water always available on-tap for showers etc . \Accommodation exceeded our expectations. Convenient location for Whitby, Scarborough, Pickering and North York Moors Railway, all well worth a visit. Will hope to come again for major family celebrations.
- Richard Francis, July 2023Jane “Accommodation extremely good, spacious and well planned.”
Plenty of hot water instantly on demand, Secure garden which was ideal with toddlers. Only minor issues were shortage of toilet paper and lack of cooking utensils, no box grater for example. However the general feeling was that this was an ideal property for our multi generation family.
- Jane, June 2023Michael “This is a beautiful house with a huge kitchen , six very large bedrooms , and excellent large shower facilities and loads of wardrobe space including in some bedrooms walk in wardrobes.”
It was even better than we expected, the gardens are huge and well enclosed for dogs , the conservatory is full of games to play and the position of the house is excellent. It's right opposite the car park in the centre of the village and two minutes walk to two pubs and all the tea shops and gift shops. We loved the walks nearby and the birdlife. It's nine miles to Whitby which is a must and the coastline is beautiful. We couldn't fault the house and would love to do again.
- Michael, June 2023Tracy “Lovely big house with plenty of space for all generations of the family.”
Huge garden to play in and explore. A lovely base in the centre of goathland
- Tracy, May 2023Suzanne “Wonderful large house with plenty of space, great garden and games facilities in central location in the village.”
Amazing showers. Well kitted out. Other reviews suggested hard to find by the postcode. It is on Beck Hole Road opposite the car park entrance, ‘what three words’ location is ‘pitch.stray.suave’
- Suzanne, April 2023Juliet “Thwaitefield is a lovely house.”
Enormous, very clean and warm, great games room, huge garden, close to the main run of shops, good supply of kitchen equipment, some amazing showers/baths - overall just a brilliant place. There were some detractions, which I'll write about below - if you're like me that's what you come to the reviews for! Despite the detractions, our party would definitely return to Thwaitefield. It's a great place to stay. Disruptive building works: Two days before we arrived, we were told there would be people on site for a day to cut down some dangerous trees in the garden in a fenced off area. Completely understandable that works like that need to be done, and our group was fairly sanguine about it, despite the short notice. It was more disruptive to our holiday than we expected, though. It was very loud very early in the day - the crew arrived at 8am and was chainsawing and shouting just outside the kitchen before 8.30am. You couldn't really have a conversation when the chainsaw was going. We had to keep the toddler inside and the dogs on a lead because heavy machinery kept being driven over the lawn to a separate area, not fenced off, where they were cutting down additional trees. The dogs were afraid of the revving of the chainsaw and ground-shaking thuds of large trees coming down; the toddler enjoyed watching the cherry picker and dangerous kit in action though! That said, after a couple of hours we decided to leave the property for the day to avoid what had become a noisy building site; would have been impossible to get the little one to nap, aside from anything else. As I say, we were understanding about it but it was quite disruptive to our plans, and we weren't given the option to say we'd rather not have them there while we were on holiday. The owner decided not to compensate us after a polite request so I thought I'd mention it here in case that concerns potential visitors. For balance, I should add that the owner did quickly provide us with a new key when the original snapped, which was very helpful. Ticks in the garden: not a reason to avoid going to Thwaitefield, but there are ticks in the garden. Perhaps bring tick collars for dogs, and a brush to check them when they come indoors. Not enough toilet roll: I'd seen this on previous reviews, we had the same problem and had to go and buy some more. Weak internet signal: There are boosters in most of the rooms, but didn't seem to make much difference. Wasn't unusual to see a teenager sat alone in the room with the router away from the rest of the group! Also, some of the group couldn't get 3/4/5G at all - if you're on the Three network and happy to use your data, you're fine though. Limited hot water in the mornings after 9am: a few of us had to have cold showers because we got the timing wrong, something to watch out for. Not enough cups: Very minor but we kept running out of cups during the day for cups of tea. Poor drainage: There was a fishy smell in a few bathrooms on some mornings, and slow drainage. I assumed the smell and drainage are connected. Hard mattress: The hardest mattress I've ever felt was in one of the rooms on the top floor. The person in that room had a few bad nights of sleep. Good for people who like hard mattresses though! Thwaitefield's a lovely place to stay. The tree issue was a bit of a pain and I'm disappointed not to receive any compensation but I wouldn't let that experience suggest anyone else should avoid this brilliant house and the beautiful countryside around it (Mallyan Spout waterfall is a good walk, and the steam railway was fun).
- Juliet, April 2023Beverley “The property in general was clean apart from all the toilet roll holders which were all dirty as well as the kitchen floor, also the filter was blocked up and the condenser was over full.”
- Beverley, December 2022Avril “This is a beautiful property and extremely well-equipped.”
It was difficult to find following the instructions and the sat nav didn't help. Adding it is opposite the carpark in Beck Hole Road would help.
- Avril, December 2022Judith “Fantastic property.”
Great for a large group. Plenty of room for everyone. Bedrooms and bathrooms very sumptuous. Grounds amazing. Only issue was the gutters were full and overflowed resulting in a few wet patches and puddles in the games room. On arrival kitchen and laundry appliances were a little less than clean. Instructions a little vague and took a while to find property. Perhaps road name would ge useful in future. Looking forward to booking property again for next year.
- Judith, September 2022Ian “Lovely property in the heart of the beautiful village of Goathland.”
All of the amenities in the village are within short walking distance. The house is equipped to a very high standard and provides plenty of space to a larger party of friends or family. We would highly recommend this property.
- Ian, September 2022Irene “Had a fantastic holiday for our second time .”
Brilliant place for a large family. Just a short stroll to the pub Inn on the Moor . Would highly recommend this property Irene
- Irene, August 2022Michael “Great holiday, loved the house.”
Only improvement would be new tennis balls ( & bats)!
- Michael, July 2022Abbie “The property was very spacious and clean.”
Perfect for a large group or large family holiday. The location is superb and it is within walking distance of the local shop, cafe and pubs. I can highly recommend this property.
- Abbie, July 2022Robert “Very much enjoyed our stay at this very large stunning house with wraparound enormous garden.”
Ideal for large family get together such as ours. Three families including four grandchildren. Garden ideal for water fights / football/ hide and seek- kids and bigger kids had a blast. Enjoyed a fantastic meal and service at The Inn on the Moor just next door. Had broken dishwasher until last day of holiday. Not ideal with so many people. Also only one dishwasher tab supplied. Dishwasher replaced with brand new replacement on the Friday. If light sleepers would recommend earplugs as very noisy sheep and wood pigeons! Less positive are some maintenance issues that need addressed:- Split shower hose in wet room shower Rusting garden furniture Some beds not comfortable- possibly need replacement Table tennis bats broken/ no net etc No hairdryer provided Broken drainpipe Bulbs needing replacement Would still very much recommend staying at this unique property.
- Robert, July 2022Lucy “Lovely house and garden and the location of the property made this holiday.”
Some of the fixtures and fitting were dated or broken (dishwasher, tumble dryer, no table tennis net, broken hockey puck). While things need updating, overall the perfect location in a great village
- Lucy, July 2022Joanne “3 generations of us had a great week at Thwaitefield, helped by the lovely weather.”
The house is larger than we expected and has a very large garden that goes round the house. The local shops and pubs are within easy walking distance and we can highly recommend the Inn on the Moor for food. Just to note, 2 of the on-suite rooms (one double and the twin) have steps to their bathrooms, one room has 2 steps, another has 4 steps, this was a consideration for us as we had 2 people with minor mobility problems (one elderly who gets up in the night, so there was a potential for a fall). During our weeks stay, the main 12 place dishwasher was broken and whilst there was a note to say it would be fixed during the week so to leave the key when we went out (which we did), it remained broken for the week. There was another 8 place dishwasher in the laundry, but for a large party this was laborious to carry everything to a different room and it had to go on twice a day. The house is generally very well equipped, but there are no hairdryers and some rooms do not have full length mirrors (although this was not a problem for us). We took 2 dogs and they had a great time in the garden, but if you have an inquisitive dog it could get out as the chicken wire has fallen down in one part, so our dogs needed watching. Overall, we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend Thwaitefield, it was a lovely place.
- Joanne, June 2022Mark “We booked this property for my wife's 60th birthday get together.”
What can I say... it was a fantastic experience! The house is beautiful and the facilities are excellent. We had everything we needed and more besides. I cannot fault this property and it helped to make happy memories that will stay with us forever.
- Mark, January 2022Julian “Excellent property, very clean and great to meet up with friends.”
Very warm house!
- Julian, December 2021Paul “Fantastic house.”
Really spacious and perfect for family get together.
- Paul, November 2021Jody “Amazing Amazing Amazing!”
The house is even better than the photos suggest. It was spotless and felt like it was 100% worth what we paid. A family of 12 ranging from a 1.5years to 70 years enjoyed, i would say its definitely toddler friendly. There seemed to be plenty of room to have time to ourselves but also great entertaining spaces for when we wanted to come together and eat, play games etc. Celebrated a 30th birthday here and will definitely be returning. The village is gorgeous and the staff in the local shops very friendly. Also one tip for future guests we ordered some Chinese food from The Fortune Inn in Pickering it was the best takeaway I've had in a long time. Great customer service! 20 min drive to pick up. Thank you so much for such a wonderful week
- Jody, November 2021Sally “We had a fabulous holiday as a large family group.”
The house was so much bigger than I expected from the photos. It had in everything we needed and more! It’s within driving distance of some beautiful places and Goathland itself is lovely and quaint. Our dog enjoyed the large garden in the property too. There was a problem with a broken bed which was fixed almost immediately after reporting. We had a lovely time and didn’t want to leave!
- Sally, September 2021Nicola “Had the most amazing week and fortunate enough to have lovely weather.”
The village of Goathland is picturesque and a tourist hotspot, with the steam train, all the little gift shops and tea rooms. Perfectly situated to explore the area and we visited Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, York, Whitby and Thornton le dale. Even though the house entrance is opposite the village car park, once behind the electric gates it’s very secluded and private. The house is very spacious and well presented, we needed to buy kitchen roll, toilet roll and bin bags, not sure if this was because of covid. The bedrooms and ensuites were really spacious, 2 of the ensuites had steps leading down to them. We didn’t have any children in our group so didn’t make use of the outdoor frame, activity table (air hockey / pool / table tennis) or games console, but I’m sure children would get a lot of fun from them.
- Nicola, September 2021Gail “We had a great week in this house.”
It did not want for anything, it was everything we needed - loads of space both in and outside the house
- Gail, August 2021Susan “House was very spacious and really well equipped.”
It was perfect for all ages from 6 to 70 and we all had a fantastic week. The games room was great for the older children. It was a memorable week to celebrate our golden wedding.we followed the instructions for bin collection but only one bin was emptied rather than 3
- Susan, August 2021Tina “Absolutely loved this house and gardens.”
Generous in size and beautiful location. Only one small criticism and that’s not enough hot water for everyone to shower in the morning. There were 8 of us, but not all showered in the morning.
- Tina, July 2021Fiona “My family had an amazing holiday here.”
The house was lovely and there was plenty to do in the area. We were all sorry to leave at the end of our week’s stay. The house itself is large enough fir everyone to find something to do without getting in each other’s way if that’s what you wanted to do, but invariably we gathered every night to play pool, table football and table tennis in the games room. Would love to come back
- Fiona, June 2021Andy “Thwaitefield is in the best location possible for Goathland, opposite the permanent car park, which is opposite the shops and cafes.”
The “Inn on the Moor” is next door and they do excellent meals and a great pint (dogs are welcome too). Thwaitefield’s perfect location is very private, with electric gates and tress all around the garden, the garden is HUGE. The house itself is also huge, but homely. We were a family of four (due to restrictions!), but it didn’t feel too big. The rooms (on the first floor, as we didn’t use the rooms on the second floor) were very specious, all with en-suite. The only thing I would change (moan about) would be the mattress in the room on the left, which my wife and I stayed in. It was huge bed, but with the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever stayed on! The lounge was very comfortable, with Sky Sports, so my son and I were very happy! We also enjoyed playing pool and table football. The kitchen was a great space to enjoy meals as a family. Goathland itself is a wonderful village, we enjoyed many walks with the dogs (so many different walks to choose from), bike rides with the kids. The station is a 5 min walk away. Whitby is only a short drive away, but we enjoyed other areas too like Runswick Bay, which is a great beach for the dogs.
- Andy, October 2020Neil “Great place Shame there were only 4 wine glasses and no knives to prepare veg.”
Everything else ok
- Neil, September 2020David “Such a beautiful property.”
We had a party of 12 and there was plenty of room for all of us. Fantastic surroundings, nicely located for trips out. Lovely to see sheep roaming freely in the village. Very well equipped house with everything you could need. Lovely relaxing holiday for all of us!!! Highly recommended
- David, August 2020Katherine “We returned home yesterday after a really fantastic week at Thwaitefield.”
The house is incredible - spacious, luxurious, clean, secure and well maintained. Also so peaceful. The only noise at night was the local sheep! We were advised before arrival that some items (such as cushions, books, ornaments) had been removed from the property due to COVID - this didn’t alter our experience. The property was spotlessly clean and really wowed us all. The wrap around gardens gave the children some much needed space to run around after what has felt like endless lockdown. The rooms are spacious and easily accommodated 9 of us. We spent much of our time together in the huge kitchen diner and on the patio. The bifold doors meant it was easy to keep and eye on the children. One of the bathroom showers leaked down into the sun room - we contacted the owner and this was sorted and fixed same day without any bother or inconvenience to us. We would highly recommend this property for large families/groups and would happily return.
- Katherine, August 2020Helen “A lovely house in a great location.”
The house was very clean, spacious and comfortable and nicely decorated for Christmas- thank you! The only thing that we found slightly disappointing was the lack of a couple of ‘basics’ that people should be aware of before visiting - for example you will need to bring your own hairdryer, bin bags, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets . Obviously this doesn’t detract from our enjoyment of the holiday and we would certainly return but little touches could make all the difference! Thank you to the owners and Sykes for a lovely holiday!
- Helen, December 2019Geoff “Great property.”
Lots of space for thirteen of us. Good location.
- Geoff, December 2019Margaret “We felt perturbed to be contacted about damage at the property, which would naturally have been reported by us If we were responsible.”
We felt we were under suspicion and would appreciate more information about the outcome.
- Margaret, September 2019Colin “Thwaitefield is an excellent property in the heart of Goathland ideal for a family get together.”
The whole family enjoyed the good amenities in the house and surrounding gardens. We enjoyed great walks around the area and hope we can get back again in the near future.
- Colin, August 2019Irene “This house and the location was fantastic ,the grounds were amazing .”
A bbq would have been nice in the garden . The walks right by the house were amazing and the village was lovely. The family had a fantastic holiday and are looking to book again and we would highly recommend
- Irene, August 2019Stephen “Excellent quality property, ideal for bringing the extended family on holiday all together, with very generous sized rooms and a large secure garden with its own private woodland area.”
- Stephen, July 2019Elaine “Had a fabulous week!”
We usually stay in Whitby but ventured here to Goathland this year and enjoyed staying in this beautiful village much more. All seven of us loved the house, thought it very spacious, ideally located and our best choice ever. It's a very large accommodation and sleeps 12 people (14 if sofa bed downstairs used) hence the expensive nightly/weekly cost but well worth it! Amply equipped and the enormous kitchen was something else. The only one slight criticism is that for a house with such extensive gardens there is no BBQ available which we thought strange. We made the short 10 min drive into Whitby a couple times in the week, an obvious "must" for all when in this area and enjoyed the more adventurous trip to see the spectacular local Mallyan Spout waterfall. The steam railway from Goathland is also something worth experiencing. Goathland village is a dream whether you are a Heartbeat fan or not, with sheep wandering the village, a few lovely local shops and of course the pub, aka The Aidensfield Arms. We will definitely return!
- Elaine, June 2019Christine “Thwaitefield provided excellent accommodation for our family holiday with 7 adults and 3 children.”
The spacious kitchen was well equipped and ideal for our large group. We all enjoyed the games room, the air hockey being particularly popular with all ages! The large garden was a delight, where we all had fun with various games and also it was great for playing hide and seek! The house being centrally situated in Goathland is very well placed for walks in the area, the North Yorks Moors railway, and it is only a short drive to the coast. All in all, a great holiday enjoyed by us all!
- Christine, April 2019Jane “Very easy to book.”
I needed to speak to Sykes staff and they were extremely helpful. The house exceeded our expectations. The whole experience was fantastic
- Jane, March 2019David “An amazing house in a great location”
- David, February 2019Catherine “Fabulous property for the whole family.”
Goathland was a delightful location and very central for the local attractions.
- Catherine, October 2018Alex “Excellent facilities in a great little village.”
Ideal surroundings to celebrate a 90th birthday with the family.
- Alex, October 2018Robert “We had a wonderful time at the house it was so spacious and comfortable with added extras to make our stay relaxing.”
Had a problem finding the house but the postmaster in the shop soon put us right. Would love to come back and see the snow on the moors sometime. Can not fault our break away.
- Robert, September 2018Julia “Beautiful house, lovely holiday, only negative was we had no wi-fi.”
which disappointed the kids but was actually probably good for them to go a week without it!
- Julia, August 2018Adam “The main issues we had during our time at Thwaitefield was the lack of Internet, which was never resolved resulting in the family going 5 days without Wi-Fi.”
Also, we didn't realise that the hot water would be limited to certain times which did disappoint us a bit. These really were the only issues and did not ruin an otherwise fantastic holiday. We absolutely loved the cottage and would definitely recommend it to others.
- Adam, August 2018David “A fabulous house in a lovely tranquil location.”
Our family enjoyed a a fantastic week in Goathland staying at Thwaitefield. When not out and about sightseeing, there were plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained in the house or in the large garden. When searching for our holiday accommodation we had looked for a property that had that something 'special' and this house, and its location, provided just that!
