Naming your Yorkshire Holiday Cottage

Naming your holiday home isn't always an easy task. Your cottage should stand out against the others but the name also needs to be appealing and easy to remember for guests. We've put together this handy guide on how to name your holiday cottage to help you find some inspiration and choose the perfect name for your Yorkshire property...

1. Location, location, location

Thinking about the physical location of your cottage is a fantastic place to start! Are you placed at the top of a historic hill? Is your cottage along the coast? Consider local landmarks, views and points of interest close to your property. Or, you could even name your cottage after the seaside town it is located in.

2. Local culture

A great way to make your holiday cottage stand out is by thinking about local culture and history. One example is Fossil Cottage – here along the Yorkshire Coast, it is one of the richest places for fossil hunting. Every year, thousands of fossil hunters, palaeontologists and amateur diggers head to the Whitby coast. There is also the famous Goth festival that takes place here each year. Consider local culture, and what draws people to the area.

3. History

What’s the history of your cottage? Is it an old barn? An old post office? Or maybe even an old police house? A historical take would offer a unique name for your holiday cottage, you can then explain the history and meaning behind the name to your guests in your welcome book! Why not start a little research into the history of the building…you may be surprised at what you discover.

4. The personal touch

Personal links to the property are a great way to come up with a unique name for your holiday cottage. Why not use your family name if the property has been passed down through generations?

5. Be original

Probably the most important thing to remember when choosing how to name your holiday cottage is to keep it original. If your property is by the coast, the obvious choice would be ‘Sea View’ – try to think outside the box and come up with something more imaginative so you stand out. A good idea is to research the names of other holiday homes nearby and try to steer clear of using anything too similar. Something unique is memorable.
