“As previous reviewers have said, Rigg Cottage is clearly a much-loved family cottage in a beautiful, peaceful setting.”

We really enjoying sitting on the front bench enjoying the view. However, quite a few things let down our stay. Firstly, the master bed was so uncomfortable (lacking in springs) that my husband ended up with a sore back and had to sleep on the floor. There was only one side light next to the main bed despite two shown on the listings. We had to move the bed in order to be able to close the bedroom door as the bedside tables were too wide. No lightbulb in the main light in the kids room, just a small lamp on the floor. The blind in the kids room is bright pink and doesn't block the light. This might be important to people with younger children. No wastepaper basket upstairs. Only four dining chairs for a cottage that sleeps five. We were told to carry the bedroom chair up and down when we mentioned this to Sykes. Only one drinking glass provided for five people. We had to ask Sykes to provide more. No hand soap provided in bathroom or kitchen. Luckily I had read a previous review that mentioned this and had brought my own but I really shouldn't have had to. Handheld vacuum so full of hair that it couldn't be used. Outdoor furniture covered in dust, dead flies and cobwebs. Thick dust behind one of the beds and hair on the bathroom skirting boards. A pint of milk was provided in the fridge but no nice welcome pack. It just didn't feel like anyone was making any effort to make it a lovely holiday experience. I also think it's worth noting that the cottage doesn't have a bath, dishwasher or washing machine in case this isn't obvious from the listings. We were lucky to be able to get a parking space close by but this isn't guaranteed (a lot of other cottages nearby have allocated spaces). The setting is very pretty and it is convenient for the beach but we felt it was poor value for money. It detracted from the enjoyment of our holiday which is disappointing as we had really looked forward to it.

Hi. Thank you for the feedback. It is a well loved family home. I’m sorry to hear your comments as Coastal Cottages are supposed to be fully managing the cottage for us and so we are really disappointed to hear your comments and we will take this up with them. As you were in for a full week you should have had a welcome pack there waiting for you. Again I will discuss this with agent. Property Owner

About the location

SANDSEND

Whitby 2.5 miles.

Lying on Yorkshire's spectacular Heritage Coastline, Sandsend is the ideal place for a family holiday with its award winning, wide sweeping beaches, rock pools and dramatic cliffs. Indeed this part of the coastline is known locally as the Dinosaur Coast because of the many fossils found here. Children will enjoy damming the little beck where it crosses the beach to form a freshwater lagoon - great (and safe) for paddling and boating! For the more energetic the village sits on the lovely long distance Cleveland Way Trail, which offers great off-road cycling along the disused coastal railway as well as breathtaking clifftop walks. The National Trust now own the nearby headland, Sandsend Ness, where there is a delightful nature trail in the old quarry pits. A special place offering something for everyone!
