“Cottage was excellent.”

Perfect location. (Just off the harbour with great views). Spotlessly clean with the decor of a private holiday home. ie everything was tasteful and of quality. Just a few points that future holiday makers might be interested in Be prepared to pay for a car park if you arrive during the day on the first day and then move your car to a permit slot in the late afternoon. It's best to just leave your car for the duration and walk out to Robin Hoods Bay, Sandsend, Staithes etc using the local ...

It's best to just leave your car for the duration and walk out to Robin Hoods Bay, Sandsend, Staithes etc using the local buses to get there/back etc. Buses are cheap and brilliant. Kitchen has a dishwasher (we didnt see this in the details). First day we had problems with the shower. Resolved by not using the highest setting until all the air had been pushed out of the system. I couldnt recommend this place enoug. My wife is extremely fussy about accomodation and she loved it !

“A really well-located and thoughtfully finished apartment.”

We appreciated the large bed and the large dining and seating areas, offering a good view over the abbey and a glimpse of the sea. The nearby pub does loud Karaoke but not late. It has a well-equipped kitchen suitable for proper cooking, although the knives are terrible. Board games and a local map were available. The access is better than you might imagine from the location - a short walk through a passageway between buildings, with key-coded gates. Narrow in parts, but step-free. Parking permits were provided and we were able to park within a few minutes' walk, and right outside for loading. Well worth it to be two minutes' walk from the harbourside.

“Fantastic, high-spec cottage that has everything - and I mean everything - you could need for perfect getaway for two.”

Gorgeous sunrise view of the abbey from the upstairs living room. The owner thoughtfully called to check on us after learning about a fire in a nearby shop (we were fine, but it's the thought that counts). There's a great butchers 60 seconds away for carnivores or a wholefood shop for veggies. And you're spoilt for choice when it comes to great little pubs (Beer O'clock and Esk Vaults to name but two). A wonderful little gem hidden away in the heart of Whitby.

“This is our second stay at Gray's Cottage.”

It has everything we want. it is bang in the centre of Whitby, but down an alley and quiet (even though it was the Goth Halloween weekend). It is well appointed and spotlessly clean. Parking is always an issue in Whitby but we are very happy parking in the adjacent car park and just factoring the cost into our holiday. Although it is short stay you can actually stay there all night and any paid for our of hours time roll over onto the next charge period. The street parking permit is a waste of time when it is as busy as it was at Halloween. It might be useful during other seasons. We would stay there again on our next visit.

“Grays' cottage is a beautiful cottage.”

It is clean and comfortable with quality fixtures and fittings. The position is perfect, tucked away, so peaceful and quiet (with a wonderful view) yet very close to the hustle and bustle of Flowergate and the harbour. The TV is a smart TV and reception wasn't always the best, although it did improve after the weekend. Check in time is 5.00pm, which isn't ideal, but wouldn't prevent me booking again.

“We had a lovely 4 night stay, the cottage was spotless and well equipped and the views from the living room window were fantastic, especially at night when the town is lit up.”

The super king sized bed was really comfy and the bedding was very luxurious, we slept really well! The cottage felt spacious and very close. The only thing I would suggest to the owner is to put a door mat in place as there was nowhere to wipe your feet upon arrival, not ideal when it’s been raining all week! I would highly recommend this cottage if you want to explore the area, it’s a 5 minute walk from both the bus and train station and transport to all the local towns and villages is very regular and on time!

“The cottage was lovely inside , it was clean and comfortable and the views were stunning .”

My only gripe is the dreadful rusty patio furniture which was literally unusable . We were lucky enough to have sunshine and with such a lovely outside area it’s a shame the patio furniture was rusty beyond belief ! Surely the owners can do better than that . We booked direct but we were not left a parking permit and despite contacting Sykes and assured one would be provided we never heard from them again so we had to park a long way from the cottage . We would love to book again but only if we could book direct with the owners as not too impressed with Sykes cottages

“The cottage is in an excellent location.”

It is a 2 minute walk from the West side of the swing bridge, right in the middle of the action. Despite this, it was very quiet inside with no external noise. The view is of rooftops with a sliver of sea. The abbey is visible on the other side of the river. The cottage is very well appointed with ample glasses, crockery etc. The bed was comfy (and huge). All furniture was modern, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was modern and clean with instant hot water in the shower. The whole accommodation looks brand new and was spotlessly clean. The only issue we had was parking… we were provided with a parking pass for W designated streets but, in the time we were there, we were unable to find a single parking space on those streets (although it was Goth weekend so extremely busy). However, with a bit of planning, we found we could use Whitby’s car parks cost effectively. I would stay there again and would recommend it to anyone else unless they needed to have designated, on-property parking.

“We really loved our stay.”

It is a lovely well equiped house with a very comfortable bed. Unfortunately, on arrival, I had to clean all work surfaces. Window sills, bedroom furniture, all mirrors in the bedroom & bathroom. It was quite dirty in places. The banister leading upstairs was filthy. The cloth I used was black. I think it 8s a major oversight as in this day & age, cleanliness needs to be paramount. This was most definitely an accumulation of dust & dirt. It's clearly not getting a thorough clean after each guest. The house itself is so nice with some really nice items. They just need a good clean & to be honest the whole place needs freshening up with a paint. I would use the word grubby. Also, the outside space on the photos looked so nice. Sadly, it was nothing like the photos. The planters were completely overgrown with weeds & there was a very old rusted small round table & 2 rusted chairs. This could really be lovely if it was looked after. Because I had to clean on arrival, the owners allowed us to stay an extra night for free which was nice. We have stayed in Whitby every year tor around 10 years now & never had to clean a property on arrival. Please clean & freshen this place up as it is such a nice house in a great central place. We are considering booking "Tuksumdoin" the house next door for next time as the cleaner was in the property when we walked past one day & she let us have a look around. Looks really nice & also has an extra bedroom. Sykes themselves were helpful once I finally reached someone. The process took 5 days to resolve. If I had known sooner that wots app was available then this would of been much quicker.

The parking system was a little confusing, but if you just park in w zones and ignore everything else on the signs then it works really well. You need a touch to open the locks on the gates in the dark We have stayed in a lot of nice cottages but all in all this was the best of the lot.

“Some people may struggle with the gated access to Grays cottage, the television was difficult to use without being reasonably good with technology as the channels were only accessible using Amazon steaming system which my husband eventually worked out, The cottage is very well situated with great views and had everything needed for a lovely stay, comfortable, quiet and the resident parking system worked well for us - maybe more difficult in the summer, we would definitely use it again.”

“Grays Cottage is in an ideal location in the heart of Whitby yet tucked away enough to be quiet.”

A good location for those arriving by bus or train. Wonderful views of the Abbey and red rooftops. It's a bit of a scavenger hunt to find it, and after dark you need a light to enter the gate codes. The cottage has a huge comfy bed and a handy dressing table and mirror, and the bathroom is brand new -- I was expecting small shampoos etc for guests but those aren't provided. The kitchen is clean, modern and well-equipped, and the instructions for laundry and dishwasher were much appreciated. The split level living makes a nice separation between sleeping and living for those who don't mind a few stairs. We were expecting to watch some TV but apparently you have to have a licence/password to do so - luckily we have a Netflix account - so be aware of this (and bring your own shampoo!). I would come again, this is a beautiful spot.

It was truly a home from home and very well equipped. The only issue we had was the lack of lighting when approaching the cottage ( to be fair not the owners responsibility) through the gates, so make sure you have a phone/ torch in the winter months. Would definitely recommend to friends

“This is an excellent property for a number of reasons, including being very central, and perfectly spacious for two, being spread over two floors, even including a (small) separate dining room.”

Nice view up to the abbey. I’m afraid I don’t understand the previous comment about needing “extensive updating”; everything looked fresh and clean, no damage to furniture or marks on walls, nice bedlinen and towels. Kitchen is small and U-shaped, but well thought out and equipped if you wanted to self-cater. The only issue arose with the Freeview box which was not connected when we arrived and which we could not get to work. However, I would reiterate one of the points from another reviewer, that this property would not be suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties, due to two factors. The first is the stairs in the property. The second is the horrendous parking problem in Whitby. The problem is not with the provided scratch card, but lies in finding a “W” space (the only permitted category) to use it. We ended up touring round at the end of the day before eventually finding a space, which can be a considerable distance from the property. Finally, Sykes please take note as follows: 1. The access instructions mention the TSB branch, which no longer exists so the reference should have been deleted; 2. The access and drop-off instructions suggest pulling up temporarily in front of Poundland (which has double yellow lines) or on street (which is a disc zone, restricted to residents). There is no mention of the obvious alternative, which is the public car park behind Poundland. Yes, it will cost you £1.70 for an hour (not if you arrived in the evening) but believe me it’s worth it. So, great property, great stay, poor arrival instructions.

The updated bathroom was an improvement on last year. However, we will not be staying again because of the enormous price increase. To charge between £800 and £1000 for this property it would need extensive updating and even then, it is very small. The ludicrous increase is a shame.

“The cottage was absolutely stunning.”

It far exceeded our expectations. The views from the cottage were exceptional . It was was extremely clean and Comfortable. Everything in there was compact which made the room space better. We both slept extremely well in the oh so comfortable large bed. The location was brilliant but I would say if you had mobility issues , this is not the place for you. We had an issue with the tv which was resolved in a matter of hours, the owner of the cottage was extremely helpful once she was made aware of the issue . The only downside of this booking is the time we were allowed to check in. It was 5 pm , which made it very difficult , if not impossible to park with the free scratch cards given to us as part of the booking. It would be better if Sykes cottages sent clients the parking passes to home addresses prior to travelling, that way, people would have a chance of a parking space. We ended up paying on a 24 hour car park , quite a way away from the accommodation until a few days after we arrived.

The cottage was well-equipped, some nice touches (sun loungers in the shed etc.) and the bed comfortable. However, the kitchen and bathroom could have been a little cleaner on arrival (black mould around bath, dust on edges of the tiles etc.). The worst thing was the lack of a bin, though. It was inconvenient and frankly a little embarrassing to have to use a public bin by the pound shop when we wanted to dispose of the rubbish bags. There are clearly bins at the property, but they were inaccessible. Everything else was fantastic.

The seaside town and port of Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire. Ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire, the local area hosts an array of activities so you can be sure to get the best out of both the countryside and the coast. From the nearby North York Moors to its Blue Flag beaches, there's something here for everyone. Amongst its many attractions, Whitby holds a charming atmosphere, home to winding streets and hidden alleys, where you can find a wide selection of eateries and shops scattered amongst them. Take a trip to the picturesque harbour and lighthouse to watch the sun set or get involved in some whale watching or a coastal cruise to watch the creatures up close. Climb the famous 199 steps to the Whitby Abbey to immerse yourself with history, or visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum presenting historical and ethnographic exhibition about Cook himself. Close to the Robin Hood's Bay, rich in heritage, wonders and scenic spots, and in easy reach of the bustling towns of Scarborough and Middlesbrough, Whitby is a prime location for exploring all of the delights that Yorkshire has to offer.

Grays Cottage Update - from Spring 2027 we will launch an extension to the cottage. The superking bedroom and main bathroom will be downstairs as usual, with the addition of a king size, ensuite bedroom on the first floor. There will also be an upstairs balcony off the lounge with wonderful views across to the Abbey. The cottage will sleep four adults in two double rooms. Sorry, no children or pets.
