“Beachwalk Villa has obviously been recently renovated but was not finished when we arrived.”

There was builder's dust, dead spiders and woodlice and various other debris such as screws and wall plugs on the floor. There was no way to clean the apartment except a dust pan and brush. We later found a hoover in an unlocked cupboard under the stairs in the main entrance hall. The property did not have a welcome pack, or indeed any welcome information sheet / binder, so it was not clear how the heating worked or what the WiFi code was, and no one sent us any information either. There was no central heating, only electric heaters which were all turned off when we arrived so the property was freezing cold. It did eventually warm up but having to manage individual heaters in each room was unnecessarily complicated. The TV had not been plugged in or configured and there was no aerial so we couldn't actually watch anything on it. The dishwasher was not plumbed in to the incoming water supply! We did not attempt to use the oven. Hot water was provided by an immersion tank which was barely enough to supply two quick showers - we never even attempted to have a bath. The ensuite shower in one of the bedrooms required you to be a contortionist to use it as the door opened inward making it very difficult to get in and out of. This is not a property for those with limited mobility. There was clear evidence of the property being an old takeaway and rusty metal debris outside of one of the bedroom windows. There was an unlocked door off of the rear bathroom full of builder's waste and mould. The rear of the house had double doors into the garden but no curtains so it was absolutely freezing and also people could see in, particularly problematic when you consider this is also where the main bathroom was accessed! My son was sat in bed when a light fitting fell down inches from his head, it was only a small plastic ring but it had obviously been glued on to the ceiling very poorly. The property is accessed by a key for the external door (only one key provided - don't lose it!) and then the internal door was a keypad lock. This felt very insecure as anyone could access the property at any time if they knew the key code. Would be much more secure with a key for the internal door too. Parking was on 'first come' basis which means you have the 3 apartments in the building fighting over the one parking space in front of the property. We spoke to our neighbours in Beachwalk Villa 3 upstairs, who ended up leaving as there was no hot water at all in their apartment, plus all the other cleaning issues too. They had also spoke to the cleaning company who said they hadn't been asked to clean the property in the last six weeks. The location is great, opposite the lovely Pannett Park and an easy 10 minute walk into Whitby town but this is spoiled by the apartments not being up to scratch. The saving grace is that the renovation is new and therefore the beds and sofas were new, and clean. Overall it could have been so much better and feels like the owners have chucked it up on Sykes to make a cheap buck for the Easter season even though the property is not finished.
