“Accommodation was fine and as described.”

What wasn't mentioned was the proximity.of the incessant traffic through Ruwarp, unfortunately not something owners or agents can do anything about. But it did detract from a pleasant stay. On a more trivial note, I thought the provision of toilet rolls and dishwasher tablets could have been rather more generous for a week's stay for 5 people -. we'd run out by mid week. I'd stopped taking these items on s/c holidays as they're usually adequate. On the other hand, a problem with the toilet ...

“The property has everything needed for an enjoyable stay.”

The garden was a big plus for us with fruit trees giving great shade. The beds were comfortable and although the cottage is on the main road we were not woken by any noise. Perfectly placed for Whiby and the surrounding areas. The only downside I can see was the steep steps, however if you don’t have any mobility issues they didn’t cause a problem for us.

“We had another fantastic stay at Field View and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.”

The cottage is beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, and incredibly spacious. The bed is so comfortable, and the large shower, with both the rainfall and standard shower options, is excellent. One of the things we really love is the lovely garden. Even during the hot weather, it stayed beautifully cool thanks to the mature trees providing plenty of shade. The laundry room and outside toilet are brilliant extras and make the property even more convenient. Having a dedicated parking space is a huge bonus and makes arriving and coming and going completely stress-free. There's also a fantastic butcher's shop just across the road, which is so handy, and the area itself is wonderfully peaceful and quiet. There are beautiful walks nearby, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. This was our second visit, and it certainly won't be our last. We love everything about Field View and will definitely be back. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, well-equipped, and peaceful place to stay. “What a lovely quaint old cottage which is well situated for a walk into Whitby along the side of the river or a short car journey to Sandsend or Runswick Bay.”

I loved the peaceful, totally enclosed garden full of beautifully smelling roses and fruit trees which was a nice safe area for my granddaughter and our small dog. The kitchen is well-equipped. I enjoyed trying the different herbal teas which I thought was a nice touch. My granddaughter enjoyed the cookies. We liked learning about the history of the cottage and Ruswarp. There are a good selection of books and leaflets. The stairs could be a problem for people with disabilities. The road is incredibly busy so there was some road noise from the front bedroom and the top bedroom. The pavements are narrow so we needed to take care walking to the car park. But these issues didn't spoil our stay. I would certainly like to return.

“Field Cottage is beautiful, lovely and warm without having to light the fire.”

However, a few logs would have been appreciated. The sofa and chair are not comfortable, I understand that the sofa is a sofa bed, but a more comfortable one would be better as the cottage would not accommodate more than 4 adults comfortably. The bed was very comfortable, a bigger duvet (to fit the cover) suitable for a king size bed would have been better. The back garden could be beautiful, however, it has been neglected and definitely needs a bit of TLC. On the whole, if we wanted to visit the area again, we would stay at Field Cottage.

“Well equipped holiday cottage an ideal base for exploring Whitby and the local area.”

Ideal as you can either walk or catch the train to Whitby. Secure garden was great for our two dogs. Shower was powerful, water was plentiful and hot, heating could be adjusted easily on site. Accommodation sleeps 6 however we just used the main bedroom on the second floor. The linen/ duvet/pillows were good quality and bed was comfortable however there was a distinct dip in the middle of it. In the lounge was seating I would say comfortable for 3 or 4 at a push. I think you would struggle to fit 5 adults on the small sofa and chair or 2 adults and teenagers / young adults. The main sofa wasn't comfortable at all. The base and back was very hard. When you can potentially spend a bit of time inside, due to bad weather, a comfy couch would be better. The cottage as described, is on a main road. Yes it is noisy, however it's also on a bad bend. The road is supposed to be 20 mph going past however cars flew along the road. This made even stopping and unloading outside very dangerous ( also double yellows) we had to carry things up and down the road to the car, and had to make sure the dogs were on really tight short leads when we stepped outside the gate as the footpath was very narrow as the cars flew past. These are just small things that wouldn't have stopped me from booking my stay, however good to know before arrival. I would stay again as the accommodation and location on a whole was great and ideal for us 2 and the 2 dogs.

The cottage allows bookings for up to 5 (there is an additional truckle bed in the smallest room which might be ok for children but we don’t count it in the overall size), so potential guests please be aware of party size. “We recently stayed in this lovely 3-bedroom cottage and had such a wonderful time.”

The cottage is full of quirky features and character, with a gorgeous enclosed rose garden at the rear complete with outdoor seating and a summer house — the perfect place to relax after a day exploring. The beds were super comfy, the large walk-in shower was excellent, and the kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed. A real bonus was the amazing butchers directly across the road, selling bread, milk, cheese, deli items, and the tastiest breakfast sandwiches! There’s also a friendly local pub nearby serving great food. The location is fantastic, with beautiful walks right from the doorstep, including into Whitby which is only around 1.5 miles away. Great home, great location — we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again!

“Lovely, well equipped house with comfortable beds and a lovely sunny garden with was great for our dog.”

The curving stairs with no barrier could be an issue for those with limited mobility or young children but were fine for our family of four with 2 teenagers. On a busy road but well located in walking distance of Whitby and with a friendly local pub nearby.

“We had a lovely week staying in Field View over New Year.”

We enjoyed New Year’s Eve in the Bridge Inn. Great to be able to walk into Whitby and lovely days out in Scarborough and Robin’s Hood Bay. The dogs enjoyed the garden and I am sure it would be nice to use the summer house in warmer months. It was great to have the extra fridge/freezer and washer and dryer in the outside shed. The village was quite busy, so the dedicated parking space at the railway sidings was greatly appreciated, although walking up the hill to the house in the icy weather was a challenge! The house listing was accurate regarding both sets of very steep twisting stairs that were difficult. We did cook at the house and the kitchen was generally well equipped with ample crockery and cutlery, however, it would benefit from having some decent cereal bowls! The weather turned extremely bad at the end of the week and it was nice that the owners made contact to check if we were okay. “Thank you for a great stay There were really no faults I could think of.”

It was a lovely place with comfortable beds, underfloor heating, amazing shower, TV with all the channels, beautiful garden, all the amenities in the kitchen, the only thing we couldn't find was a bottle opener. An extra special thank you for the Oat Milk, as we are Vegan. Not many places stock plant milks.

“We were very happy with cottage and its facilities.”

Location was perfect, footpath opposite led to Cinder path and on to Whitby, only a 35-40 minute walk (£8 in taxi). Best butcher's on the planet also opposite offering some amazing food and a great breakfast and a great local pub just down the road. Lovely enclosed garden with summer house. Would visit again.

The garden, if you're staying in warmer months, is an absolute bonus! Lovely stay all round. Also, Ruswarp is beautiful and there's a lovely walk directly opposite the cottage, ideal if you have a dog. On your doorstep is a superb butchers. Regular buses into Whitby just a few minutes walk away.

“Lovely cottage , great location for walking into Whitby, (footpath opposite the house) The house was well equipped and comfortable, our kids loved the little steep staircases especially the attic room but glad they were older to mange these, wouldn't be easy to manage for very young children .”

The cottage is steeped in history and the decor is simple , elegant and sympathetic to that, bringing it up to date to but no losing the cottages quirky charm, some beautiful pieces of furniture

“We had a lovely stay at Field View.”

It is a lovely old cottage with lots of original features. It is half a hour stroll into Whitby along the railway track, so very handy. The butchers over the road sell some lovely produce but there is no village shop anymore for a full range of items so come prepared .The hidden garden was a plus as we had our dog with us and we loved the cosy wood burner in the evening. The treats were a thoughtful touch thank you. We have already recommended to friends.

“Fantastic property with everything we needed for our short stay in Ruswarp.”

Spotlessly clean, well equipped & pleasant cottage, with lovely fully enclosed garden / summer house, that provided easy walking access to Whitby & surrounding areas. First time we've stayed in an "eco friendly" property (solar panels & outside heat pump) that provided for all our needs and more, so no qualms about the technology affecting our enjoyment / comfort. Many thanks to the owners for the stay and we definitely recommend Field View to anyone looking to stay in the area.

About the location

Whitby 1.5 miles; Sandsend 2.5 miles, Robin Hood's Bay 6 miles.

Situated just 1.5 miles inland from Whitby, the small village of Ruswarp lies on the River Esk, with old stone cottages lining the main street. Ruswarp has excellent amenities, including a local pub with hand-pulled real ales, a village shop and a renowned local butcher. The Esk Valley Walk runs through the village, and it is an easy 25 minute walk to the centre of Whitby. Ruswarp has a regular bus service, and the single track railway has regular steam trains running through! Enjoy an hour’s boating on the river, or feed the local ducks. Arguably the most historic landmark in Ruswarp is the brick-built viaduct. It once supported the main Scarborough to Whitby line. The viaduct is 120 feet high and when it was built it took more than five million bricks to complete. The viaduct was closed in 1965. The viaduct is now known as the cinder track, a walk/cycleway along the former Whitby-to-Scarborough railway line. A perfect location for exploring the surrounding coastline and the dramatic North York Moors.
