Very good base for touring in Yorkshire.

Great comfortable beds and bedding, lovely modern bathroom. Parking wasn’t an issue for us but road is quite busy. The cottage has loads of character - beams and sloping floors. Thornton Le Dale is a beautiful village. Thanks for a great holiday.

We had a great time in Thornton-le-Dale.

The cottage is just as listed, well equipped, the bedrooms are very comfortable. There is a lovely garden at the back for the sunny days. Thornton is a great location to visit Yorkshire and there are plenty of walks around the cottage. Ian was also very helpful and responsive with our queries. We would recommend and really enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful property in a lovely location.

Plenty of space for 6 of us plus a baby. We were very comfortable and the beds were good sized and had lovely linen. A well equipped kitchen and access to all of the main TV apps. We enjoyed our stay.

York house is a 5* sympathetically modernised spacious terrace cottage in Thorntondale, the property has been recently modernised to a very high and comfortable standard.

There is a large and very comfortable sitting room with a very large smart tv (looks a good 65” !). The kitchen is full functional, fridge freezer, coffee machine (bring some proper beans!), oven, microwave etc. Three very comfortable large bedrooms, we stayed downstairs with the dog. And this was a beautiful room, however it’s fair to say the premier room is most likely upstairs by the toilet/bathroom. However there is also a perfectly functional outdoor toilet which does as it says on the tin if you’re not too posh/soft to flush outdoors! The shower in the bathroom is a large walk in, and was excellent, it’s made my shower at home appear a little inferior! Private and secure court yard out the back, however no rear access. You park and enter via the front door only, personally we never struggled to park at the front, and even had grandparents visiting who always managed to get parked up at the first time of asking too. It’s a relatively busy road yes, however it’s perfectly safe to park and cross. You could most likely find rear parking however this would require a 2-3 minute walk back to the front of the property. Ian is a fantastic host, always on hand to help and answer questions, which generally makes a big difference in my experience (good communication). Leading up to arrival and once we were in the property he always on hand to answer queries. Make sure you seek out the Ellerburn river walk, about 2.4 miles in total from the house, head right down towards the village church on your right hand side, stay right down to the river (river on your left hand side) walk approximately 4/500 metres to the large Burgess animal feed building, here you will see a private gated long high hedged drive way, keep this to your right and use the path between the hedge and the little wooden bridge, this will take you on a river walk out to Ellerburn, then when you get to the farm/campsite take a left back on to the very quiet road to Thorntondale. This is a circular walk and is suitable for all ages and great for dogs too. Also another lovely walk via the woods in the village, have a look on google maps, there a nicer ways to cut down to the woods from York House via the ThorntonDale Show ground. Lots of lovely dog walks if you have a good look and work it out. I grew up in the village so know it like the back of my hand. In the village there are two pubs, The Buck, where we just had decent enough meal (Easter 2026) , and very good fresh fried cod, The New Inn, new owners, who I’m yet to try out, excellent bakery in Baldersons, (superb ice creams too), a few cafes, bakeries, newsagents, fish and chip shop, pizza takeaway, mini-mart, (expensive avocados!!) even a decent MTB shop, which of course if this is your thing you will know all about Dalby Forest which is approximately 3/4 miles away and not to be missed having excellent trails. If you’re after something a bit more fancy food wise head over on the Scarborough road over to Allerston, (3 miles away) the Cayley Arms is a decent upgrade on the offerings in ThorntonDale.

We loved our stay at York House from beginning to end.

Spotlessly clean, spacious, extremely comfortable beds, modern bathroom, well equipped kitchen, milk in the fridge, coffee pods, and a great launching pad for exploring the North York Moors. We particularly loved and made good use of the fireplace and piano, and appreciated being able to bring our cat with us. We highly recommend York House.

Facilities top notch We spent a bit on the fire to keep us comfortable in front room but having said that we were there during a very cold snap We had 2 lots of visitors join us half of the week each and we all felt so at home there a happy time

This was our second stay at York House, it is a fabulous cottage, it is homely, roomy, and has everything you need.

It has traditional beams and features, the beds and pillows are great, the lounge with the open fire is perfect and it is finished to a high standard. It is a short walk into the town and overall we could not fault the cottage and we would highly recommend it anyone. it is well worth the value.

Comfy beds. In a good area to explore North yorkshire. About 10 minute walk from centre of the village Parking across the road . No problems. Would be happy to return to this cottage in the future.

We really enjoyed our stay at York House, wonderful cottage that has lots of character.

Finished to a very high standard, lovely quality of furnishings, bedding, towels, tableware etc. Very comfortable beds, my kids now want to swap them for their singles at home! We have 2 petite whippets, they seemed to appreciate the amount of space they had to sleep and lounge around! We used a stair gate that was in the property to ensure they stayed downstairs. Very well decorated and nicely presented cottage.

We parked opposite with no problem at all times of day. There are three good sized bedrooms and two big reception rooms, but if you’re a large party there’s only only one toilet/bathroom! (Does seem the outside toilet is being refurbished.) Outside yard is a suntrap in the afternoon and there are some lovely walks in and around the cottage. Village centre is very pretty and lots to do within a 30 minute drive.

Fabulous stay, property spacious, clean and tidy.

Only issue we had there were no instructions (that we could find) on how to work the cooker hob, so struggled a little with cooking on the hob. The grill/oven was easy to work out. Other than that, beautiful cottage. Would definitely book again.

Lovely stay and lovely cottage

We had a great stay at York House.

It was all the things you would want from your holiday property-comfortable, clean, well equipped and spacious. The location was about a quarter of a mile from the village, on the main road which made it easy to get essential shopping and enjoy the wonderful ice creams. We were not disturbed by road noise as the cottage is so old with thick stone walls and double glazing. The back garden was a real sun trap and the outside toilet took me back to my childhood! We felt the location gave us the perfect mix of moor and beach trips and the local food options were amazing with excellent kitchen equipment if you decided to eat in. We will be returning in the future.

The cottage itself was lovely.

However we thought the access to the cottage let it down. To unload our car proved quite dangerous has it was on a busy main road through Thorton Le Dale and we had to park across from the cottage and the side of the road where cottage is situated had a high wall with 3 steps at various points which you had to climb to get onto the foot path to the cottage. Our stay at the cottage and the area it's in where ideal it was just the parking that let it down.

York house is a lovely cottage and has been renovated to a very high standard.

It was lovely to have a bottle of milk and teas coffees and hot chocolate provided a nice touch. The beds really comfortable. The TV was so nice to have the TV packages kept us all entertained and was also nice to have games and books provided. The garden is a sun trap and nice to have drinks in the sun. Kitchen equipment excellent and everything you need to make meals again a nice touch to have kitchen cloths and to have things like baking paper and foil all the things you sometimes need. Would highly recommend.

Absolutely beautiful cottage in a gorgeous little village.

Was deceptively large. Very clean and well maintained. Kids loved the selection of games. Only minor downside is the road noise but obviously this can't be helped. Great communication from the owner. Would definitely stay again.

Its a fantastic cottage, really clean and tidy, comfortable and warm.

Less than 10 minute walk into the village centre with shops/ cafes and pubs. Great walks available directly from the village and also a great base for visiting other parts of the Moors/ the coast and York. If you were staying with 6, just note the one bathroom but nothing that isn't manageable. There is a modern and clean toilet in the garden which would help alleviate some of the morning rush too! Thanks for a great stay and will certainly return.

York House is a beautiful property, sensitively renovated with plenty of room and in a stunning location.

The parking can be tricky but once you discover the road behind the property it is less stressful! We had a lovely week there over Christmas. Thank you to the owners for the 2 beautiful trees in the windows!

Had a lovely stay at York House, only down side was 1 WC could do with another downstairs especially when holidaying with elderly relatives, the downstairs bedroom would welcome an en suite in our opinion.

The only other thing which is out of the owners control is the really busy road, and difficulty parking, when trying to get all of your luggage and shopping across the road whilst only being able to open one side of the car due to the kerb, it was quite scary at times as we had 2 elderly relatives and a child plus the road noise was quite bad early morning. Apart from that we had a perfect stay the house is clean, cosy yet spacious and we had everything we needed, we ate ate at the Fox and Rabbit a few miles up the road which was fabulous and also The Buck Inn, wouldn’t recommend The Buck Inn simply because of the noisy locals shouting and swearing whilst we were trying to have a family meal. Half an hour from Whitby which was a nice day out. Close to Dalby and Pickering also nice days out. Just a 10 minute walk from the village lovely walks and a fabulous ice cream parlour, fish and chip shop was really good and there is a grocery store selling everything you could need. All in all a lovely break and we were lucky with the weather too which was a bonus!

Had a great week at Thornton dale.

York house wasn't that great for us , the downstairs bedroom seems to have a damp issue and smelled a little fusty. The cooker in the kitchen was a duel oven but the top one was broken and taped off. The parking on the main road was a problem for us with having two dogs and trying to get them into the car safely across a busy main road and you weren't always guaranteed the same parking space and sometimes had to park farther away from the cottage.Apart from these issues we still had a fantastic week and the weather was very good.

Fabulous, characterful, house in super location.

Comfort and luxury, combined with excellent WiFi and large Smart TV. Immaculate and so clean. Bedrooms fitted with the comfiest beds and all beds' and bedding of the highest quality, as was everything else. Location excellent, and although on a busy road with parking on opposite side, we managed fine with our slow, 15 year old Labrador, and me with some mobility issues. Small issue, outweighed by all the positives. We all loved our time there, and were sad to leave, but will definitely book again. Hosts also excellent with communication and nothing too much trouble.

Fantastic property, the best we have stayed at in the area.

The cottage was well furnished and fully equipped, just a short walk from the shops / pubs. We would definitely recommend this property and the owner was very good at communicating and on hand with any queries / check in details.

We have had a wonderful stay in this beautiful cottage.

The photos really dont do the cottage justice. The bedrooms are all very large with wonderfully comfy beds. The bathroom is finished to a really high standard with a great shower. There were a few things not working in the kitchen which we were advised about before our stay which didnt really bother us, but could be an issue if you plan on doing a lot of cooking. Also the parking wasnt great having young children with us as you have to park across the road which was quite busy.

We spent a lovely few days at York House in June, during a very hot spell of weather.

The flagstone floors and stone walls made it a lovely, cool haven to return to. The beds were very comfortable and the cottage is well eqipped. It's just a shot walk into the lovely village and to 'The Buck' pub which serves excellent food. (Anyone considering booking should be aware of the parking situation - it is on the road opposite the cottage. It wasn't a major issue for us but the road can get busy and it could be a consideration for anyone with children).
