“We’ve just returned from a lovely week in Helmsley- a pretty, bustling town in a beautiful county.”

The weather was mostly perfect and the cottage was only a few minutes walk from the town centre. However it is on a busy main road so be warned, the traffic is noisy! The cottage could do with some re-decoration, eg paint is peeling off the walls in the dining room in a few places but we found it clean on arrival. We have three constructive comments/suggestions to make: there is virtually no clothing storage space - only 1 wardrobe, a few coat hooks and some bedside tables. We had to live ...

We had to live out of a suitcase! Secondly, no towel rails anywhere, so with 4 people we had to drape them over the bannister and over the tops of doors and radiators… Finally please consider printing out a rubbish collection calendar. It shouldn’t be up to your guests to Google this information. Telling them to simply “put the bins out when you vacate the property” is not helpful. Especially when the recycling is collected the day before you leave (Thursdays)! (Also, please fix the broken toilet in the upstairs bathroom. It’s the little things that often make the big difference.) Please not that the above didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of our week’s holiday in Helmsley but we really felt this cottage fell short of the usual Sykes ‘5 Tick’ standard of property.

About the location

HELMSLEY

Kirkbymoorside 6 miles; Thirsk 14 miles; Pickering 13 miles; York 26 miles.

Lying in a sheltered corner of Upper Ryedale, on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, Helmsley is a prestigious market town with a spacious market square surrounded by houses, hotels and shops. The area is important historically - Helmsley has its own 12th century castle and English Heritage’s Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are close by. Helmsley also boasts an arts centre showing films and plays, and an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the summer. There is excellent walking on the doorstep - indeed the Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley - and the surrounding North York Moors with their hidden dales and villages are pretty in all seasons. York is less than an hour's drive south, as is Scarborough, Whitby and the east coast, whilst Pickering and the beginning of the famous steam railway line (North Yorkshire Moors Railway) are a little over 20 minutes' drive.
