A charming cottage resting on Yorkshire's Heritage Coastline within the North York Moors National Park. Pet-friendly. Large lawn with bay views. Woodburning stove. Amenities within walking distance. Whitby 3.3 miles; Middlesbrough 26.7 miles.

We’ve just returned from a week in crab cottage and we loved it

Could hardly tear ourselves away. It’s in the most gorgeous little valley, 30 seconds from the beach, overlooking a small river. It’s beautifully furnished and decorated. We were 4 people and we had lots of space. Very comfy beds. The kitchen/ dining room is an excellent living space. We spent a lot of time sitting on the bench in the front garden looking at the view. Heavenly. I’ve just read the previous review and was rather shocked by it though I can agree with a couple of things. The garden furniture is a bit shabby and the front garden could benefit from a bit of attention. It’s slightly overgrown. The window in the twin room didn’t open. But for us, these were small issues and our overall impression of the property was excellent. We had a fabulous experience.

Perfectly positioned for exploring the best of the coast and countryside that Yorkshire has to offer, Crab Cottage is a welcoming base from which to enjoy a holiday in this region. With sandy beaches in walking distance, as well as exceptional views from the garden, this property offers a family or group of friends a delightful abode for a relaxing break on the beachfront. As you step inside, you'll find a charming snug to your right, making a cosy spot to spend your evenings with a loved one curled up in front of the television as the warmth of the woodburning stove fills the room. Moving further into the house you'll find the open-plan living space, with a sitting area tucked away neatly in the corner, a dining area where you can enjoy all your home-cooked treats and a traditionally-styled kitchen, this room offers everything you could need for a self-catered stay whilst also providing a mixture of contemporary and traditional charm. The rest of the ground floor is made up of a convenient cloakroom and utility, whereas the first floor plays host to the three glorious bedrooms in the form of a double with an en-suite shower room, a further double and a single, all sat beneath sloping ceilings, only adding to the character of the dwelling. To the rear of the property you can find your own multi-level garden where the little ones and your canine companion play freely as you take in the wonder of the bay from the kitchenette area. The local fishing village of Sandsend offers its own excitement in the form of a dog-friendly beach and a selection of eateries to indulge in after a day of sun-soaking, or for a day packed with adventure, the nearby historic, seaside town of Whitby provides attractions for all ages varying from museums to whale watching; there's something here for every taste. With easy access to the many delights of the National Park and the beauty of the coast, Crab Cottage makes the perfect base for your family getaway to Yorkshire.

Third time we have stayed at Crab cottage. The cottage is in a fantastic location and we knew exactly what to expect. The cleaning was well below expected, there was litter in the drawers and wardrobe and lots of cobwebs. As previously the rear garden was messy with lots of junk. The shower door in the bathroom had been removed and not replaced and no shower curtain or equivalent given making the shower unusable without soaking the bathroom. The cottage is fantastic but needs a thorough clean and a bit of investment to bring it back up to scratch.

The property has an Aga fitted in the kitchen. The Aga was turned down so low that we couldn’t cook on it. The pilot light went out on the first day, so we wasted a couple of meals trying to cook on it, even after it was relit and up to temperature. It took a while to figure out that all we had to cook on was the microwave and induction hob, but neither any use for oven cooking. While it is a nice looking feature, it is not functional and would be far better replaced by a range oven. I imagine in winter it is too hot. While the property is dog friendly, the rear garden is not self-contained, and therefore we couldn’t let the dog off the lead which was a pain. The bedroom with the en-suite shower - the shower leaks and drains over the beam in the hallway. We had at least two occasions where we had to clean up the leakage in the hall. With no dedicated parking space, access for loading and unloading is difficult, and we had to pay full whack for parking in the beach car park (the parking permit mentioned in the description wasn’t evident, and the parking meters set the same rate whether you have a permit or not). The location and property itself is lovely, but we would not stay there again because of the issues mentioned above.

Lovely cottage, beautiful location. Very clean, and really comfy beds. Only slight thing was we booked for an infant, but no cot. I think maybe in hindsight,we were supposed to bring our own,but didn't specify. Otherwise we will be back ,with cot.
Mrs Driver
Location, quality of accommodation and general upkeep and cleanliness all excellent. Thank you
Mr Newton
Lovely cottage, excellent location parking not impossible but tight, unfortunately the B & O Music system might have been cutting edge in the 90’s but we couldn’t get it to work, a decent blue tooth speaker would be much more appropriate and then everyone can play there own music from their i phone or i pad, no welcome package just a couple of bin bags asking us to strip the beds after us, not a great 1st impression, the green wheelie bin was already full on arrival we placed it outside for collection on the Tuesday and it was not emptied the other households had their blue bins emptied but we only had a green bin and were unable to recycle. Astonishing amount of BIG NO DOG SIGNS on parts of the beach which fortunately no body seemed to take any notice of.

Crabb Cottage - this property is supposed to portray a "luxury cottage" and although the cottage itself was lovely it wasn't very clean and the products that were provided were very little. For example there were half bottles of hand soap from Aldi (good job we brought our own along) - I wouldn't mind but we had to pay nearly an additional £500 as the holiday had to be moved from April (due to Covid-19) to September - we would have at least expected a welcome basket but there was nothing. The television in the main bathroom didn't work and the controls on the left-hand side of the door for the sound was hanging off - very poor. The cushions and seating in the living room were dirty - we did take along our own throws (thank goodness). Also, we were aware of the parking issue prior to going but to be honest it was a headache we could have done without. We have loved and enjoyed all the cottages we have stayed in through Sykes but on this occasion the cottage just wasn't up to standard and what we actually paid for. We would normally have scored a 9/10 for recommending Sykes as we have been on quite a few holidays with you.
Mrs Stead
This is a fabulous cottage, in a beautiful position within the Sandsend valley. We loved being so close to the beach; having a pub and a shop nearby too; and having a front garden overlooking the little river. The inside of the cottage was beautifully decorated, and was extremely comfortable. It made for a perfect holiday. We had a couple of small concerns. The summer house was very dirty and untidy when we arrived, and we had to get the cleaners back. There was also a slight air of neglect about the garden front and back, and about the outdoor furnishings. This was not in keeping with the rest of the cottage. Also, there was no 'welcome pack' despite oour request for one. These are small issues, easily remedied. Overall, this is a really lovely holiday, with plenty of space for 4 of us, and we would be more than happy to return.
Mr Gimlette
Parking is a problem here. "First one first served" is not good enough for a £1300 cottage. We were lucky that someone left on Sunday otherwise we would have had nowhere to park. Also disappointed that simple things like enough dishwasher tablets and loo rolls were rationed at this price. If it is a "luxury" stay make it perfect.
Mr Hayday
Hello, Despite the boiler breaking down, during the holiday and us having no hot water, you did your best to resolve the problem (out of hours) and fully understand our needs as customers. The welcome box was more than welcome, with some very interesting goodies, such as the fabulous Botham's Ginger Parking. Far better than some other holiday companies who leave some stale scones and half a pint of milk! I've even ordered a load of coffee from the Baytown Coffee Company. Good news for your own partnership feedback! Overall a very well presented cottage in a very nice place, with good facilities which were clean and fresh. Even the guest manual was fresh and cleanly laid out not tattered and full of local takeaway flyers. Our first holiday with the Sykes company was a refreshing experience. You must be doing something right to even get a mention in the House of Commons yesterday (23/03/2020), during the Coronavirus Bill debate. Thank-you for everything.
Mr Swift-Rollinson
Hidden Gem, location is fantastic! Our family (2 adults and 4 children) loved our break. The cottage is just perfect, right down to the small detail and the added extras that make it ideal for a family getaway.
Mr Harrison
What a pity this once superbly equipped cottage has bee allowed to run down. Broken/ obsolete / missing equipment needs repair/ replacement and look at the visitors book will tell you that previous similar comments have been ignored. Parking is problematic particularly if you have elderly people and / or young children with you. It is not at all easy to park on the road and the advertised parking permit was not provided; a complaint about this was met with a parsimonious request to provide parking receipts for refund but straightforward offer of compensation would have been more appropriate
Mr Winning
I phoned to report some problems with appliances (in particular, 2 TVs) not working and that there was no QR code in the property for Test & Trace. Cleaning was not hugely thorough (lots of cobwebs) and the outsides of the windows were filthy. A handyman was sent but could not remedy the TV problems. I was sent a possible PIN for one of the TVs but when it did not work nobody responded or got in touch again. I was told a QR code would be placed in the property but it never was. This a such a lovely house but the fact that things did not work and the windows and garden were unkempt took the shine off our holiday. Worrying that the price next year seems to have significant increased when things are like this.
Mrs Greenwood
A very enjoyable stay in this lovely cottage. Excellent location just a short walk to the beach and very cosy and comfortable. However we were disappointed that the garden was not secure for a medium sized dogs, and offered an easy escape to the neighbouring property. A few other maintenance issues needed attention : - electricity frequently tripping out day and night which shut down the Aga, internet and other devices; poor drainage from the main shower; and garden lights not working. As these were reported to Sykes I expect they’ should be fixed now. A second set of keys would also have been helpful. Despite these issues we had a wonderful time.
Mr Howard
A parking permit for the car park was advertised but there was not one. Limited street parking available but we did get a space. We travelled during coronavirus and were able to - publicity about Sykes’s lack of giving refunds if we’d have had to cancel will make us think very hard before booking with you again. Everything else was great and we enjoyed a lovely holiday.
