“We have had the most miserable holiday ever.”

This was due to a restrictive clause imposed on our stay, which was only introduced to us after we had fully paid for the holiday. This was due to a restrictive clause imposed on our stay, which was only introduced to us after we had fully paid for the holiday. This was that under no circumstances at any time could our dog be left alone in the house. Why was this never made clear in the initial details? We have stayed at many cottages in Whitby before and are used to ‘dog rules’ which are always made clear from the start. We have no problem with these and happily adhere to them. But this restriction, imposed at the last minute, meant that we could not go into town together, go for long walks during the day together, go out in the evening together…all the things we love to do in Whitby. Our dog is a 12 year old Cavalier with a heart condition, he doesn’t do distance or crowds! The only thing we could do as a family all week was to walk him round the block. We are therefore looking for substantial compensation for a ruined holiday. I have spoken with Sykes today who have told me they will set up a case and get back to me. You cannot impose such restrictive conditions at that stage of an agreement. In fact it is illegal to do so, and this is a route we shall take if necessary.

The property

GROUND FLOOR   This smart townhouse has been lovingly refurbished to create a beautiful seaside property and a wonderful choice for holidaymakers wanting something stylish, with a great location near the harbour, beach and Whitby's town centre with its quaint shops, award-winning restaurants, charming tea rooms and heritage sites.   A small enclosed terraced area to the front has steps to the door.

The entrance hall leads to the sitting room, which has a comfortable sofa and arm chairs, Smart TV/DVD, chandelier, a feature wall in brick work, real-flame effect fire and very funky wall radiators!

Great attention to detail has been paid to the decor, from the rug, Roman blind and accessories, which feature jewelled and coordinating colours, creating a perfect spot to relax at the end of a day after exploring the coast's many treasures, wandering Whitby's cobbled streets or sunbathing on the golden beach!   The dining room has wall-to-ceiling cupboards providing storage including an integrated fridge/freezer adjacent to the kitchen.

The colours are duck egg blue with accents of copper including three wonderful drop lights over the table and seating, designed to enjoy meals together, whether it's breakfast discussing what to do or recapping the activities over supper.

The dining area has a wall-mounted Smart TV/DVD. The dining area also has a window seat - that stores a selection of board games and DVDs to enjoy - overlooking the enclosed, decked rear courtyard garden, perfect for morning coffee at the start of another wonderful day at the coast.   We love the kitchen which echoes the colour scheme of the dining room; it's well-equipped with an electric oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine/dryer.

The ironing board and iron are housed in a tall cupboard in the adjacent dining area.   There is a useful ground floor WC and cloaks area.   FIRST FLOOR   Open the door at the head of the stairs and be taken aback by the most wonderful and very spacious bathroom with dark green glossy tiles, a double size walk-in shower, free-standing bath, Victorian-style with high cistern WC and hand wash basin plus chandeliers and ornate over-basin mirror.

We also love the art deco table, containing toiletries for guests to enjoy.

It's so elegant and charming that you'll want to draw a bath, add some bubbles, sink down and relax!   It is a 'Jack and Jill' bathroom with two doors, one of which leads to the sumptuous master bedroom.

This has a superb 5' king size mahogany bed, with a deep mattress for extra comfort plus bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe and a Smart TV.   SECOND FLOOR At the top of the stairs is a bookshelf with a small library of books for guests to enjoy and exchange if desired.   The second floor has two bedrooms, one of which is en-suite.

The first bedroom that faces the rear of the house has a double size bed (4'6") decorated most charmingly with nautical-style decor in blue and white with a porthole mirror, crisp navy and white bed linens and beach-inspired accessories.

There are bedside tables, bedside lights and a double wardrobe.   The master bedroom on this floor has a 5' king size brass bed, bedside tables, a large wardrobe and TV.

The en-suite in this room is wonderfully appointed with WC, hand wash basin and a thermostatic shower, guaranteed to refresh.

From this bedroom, there is also a fabulous view of the iconic Whitby Abbey on the headland.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.
