In the heart of Whitby sits this beautiful upside-down cottage, Stoker's Rest.
Stoker's Rest is an excellent home base for families and couples wishing to make the most of the Yorkshire coastline since it provides easy access to Whitby's attractions, including the magnificent beach less than half a mile away.
Before ascending to the open-plan living area, enter the spacious reception hall where you can leave your jackets and boots.
Bright and airy, this space allows you to socialise as a group.
You can gather on the sofa to stay warm by the electric fireplace, or you can sit at the dining room table while the group's chef takes charge of the kitchen.
The kitchen comes equipped with everything you need, including a washer and dryer, so no need to bring your entire wardrobe.
King-size and twin bedrooms are located below and are both neutrally decorated and have access to the bathroom with a choice of a bath and a shower over.
There is a little patio space outside with a picnic bench that is perfect for outdoor picnics.
Take the short stroll over to Whitby, a gorgeous sandy expanse from which you access West Pier and see the beautiful lighthouse, when you're ready to explore.
Whitby makes a great holiday location.
Visit the amazing Whitby Abbey, learn about the city's lengthy history at Whitby Museum, climb the fabled 199 steps, or go along The Cinder Track.
If your wanderings take you farther out, visit Robin Hood's Bay, where you can discover a beautiful beach, a variety of cafés, and the well-known Robin Hood's Bay Museum.
While resting at Stoker's Rest, there's plenty to look forward to.

This is the 3rd time I've stayed here which I wouldn't do if the cottage wasn't of the highest standard. The bed is so comfy and the linens and towels really clean and good quality. Its well equipped and thoughtfully laid out. Its rare to find Whitby accommodation with parking and outside space which is a big plus for these cottages. Can't fault any of it!

Ideal holiday cottage for access to numerous places to visit,parking which is important in whitby,steam trains passing your window nothing to say anything bad about this holiday home

The accommodation was very comfortable and the parking was a bonus. Being able to leave the car and walk to the town was really nice. Also walkable to the train station which was a bonus. I would certainly recommend this accommodation.

Stoker's Rest was a super spot close to Whitby centre but in a quiet street.
The cottage was very comfortable and very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. A real home from home. Welcome pack provided was also much appreciated. Would recommend and will definitely be back.

Stokers Rest is situated a short distance from the town centre just a 5 minute walk but is in a very quiet location.
It is an upside down property and going down stairs to bed was a bit strange! The house has everything that you could possibly need. It is comfortable, clean and easy to keep clean. 2 little negatives. Parking is not that easy for a large car. The doors took a while to get the hang of when locking but we worked it out before we went out on the first night. There is a train track right outside the property and watching the steam engines was fascinating for us but not for everyone. 10/10 from us.

Yes the upside down house isn't your average style of house, but many guest love that. It makes the property different and quirky. I personal love it because in the hot summer days the bedrooms stay cool. The parking space is 3 meters wide and we have the advantage of the 1 meter footpath beside our space giving you extra room. A supermarket car parking space is 2.40 meters and disabled space is 3.60 meters. I have had Range Rovers, Ford Rangers and a van in that space. We always reverse in and maybe that would have made it easier. The door handles unfortunately had to be changed to a thumb turn inside lock to meet fire safety regulations, so in the unlikely event of a fire everyone could get out without finding the keys. I do agree its annoying that you have to really lift the door handle to lock the door from the inside but everyones safety is so much more important to us. We had a most wonderful stay at Stoker's Rest.
It was very clean, everything you could need was there, exceeded expectations in every way. Would highly recommend this property. We loved having the kitchen and living room upstairs for the views and the upstairs toilet was great too. Thank you to the people who look after this property.

We both found the “lounge”seating a little low and could not sit comfortably, The dining chairs were perfect in height.
The property was spotless and in an excellent location and we had a much needed relaxing week.
I am so pleased the property was so good in so many ways for your holiday. As for the lounge seating, sorry you didn't find it comfortable. I have had only positive feed back about the new sofa from my regular guests. There is a number of cushions around the property which may have helped. The sofa is standard height and the same height as the dinning chairs. I measured them so I could look into getting something higher. I will look into maybe getting a high armchair, as I don't want any off my guests feeling uncomfortable. Thank you
Shower needs looking at.
Taps are so stiff it's very difficult to turn them with old hands! Also temperature impossible to regulate. Either scalding or freezing. Locks on both doors incredibly stiff again very difficult for older hands!!
I am so sorry you had problems opening doors and turning on the shower. I have numbers to call if a guest experiences problems like this. Yorkshire Coastal Cottages would have sent someone out within hours. I have contacted the guest who is there now and he said it is of a normal standard. However that being said you still struggled and maybe a gripping glove might help you in future. I also have nerve damage in my hand and struggle with opening jars, so I totally understand how frustrating this can be. The temperature on the shower is a simple turning and if you struggle with your hands you maybe turned it too far. I will make a note of your booking name and make sure I have a portable tap shower head there so you can easily move the tap to get the right temperature. In future if you ever stay again if there is any problems no matter how small please contact us, so we can make sure you have the most perfect holiday. Always happy to help. Thank you

Facility was very clean which was great.
Lovely little house. We are very glad we picked this place. Only improvement could be the mattresses in the single beds are very uncomfortable. Also apologies as we accidently took one of your white bath towels home, my husband must have grabbed it and packed it, sorry.

I had actually bought 2 new single mattresses when I bought the new king sized mattress, but unfortunately there was a problem and they couldn't deliver them with the king sized mattress. As I am sure you noticed that the king sized bed has got the highest quality mattress and I reassure you that the single mattresses will be of the same high quality. When I could arrange for the new mattresses to be delivered, my cottage was already booked up. I will be having a holiday there in July and that's when the new mattresses will be delivered. I am truly sorry that they won't there for your visit, hopefully you will return and feel much more comfortable. Don't worry about the towel, these things happen. Spotlessly clean, really well equipped accommodation.
Everything one could need in this very pleasant cottage. Just out of town to be quiet and peaceful but near enough to be in the centre of things with a 10 minute stroll. Own parking space where we hardly used the car in a week. If I may venture just one bit of advice, install a wall bar of some kind over the bath/shower to provide something to grip on. Especially for older people like us. My advice to anyone looking for a most pleasant place to holiday in lovely Whitby is to look no further than Stoker’s Rest. You won’t be disappointed.

We had carefully researched Stoker’s Rest before booking and it certainly fulfilled expectations.
Clean, warm and welcoming with all the facilities you could need, it was a home from home. We know Whitby well and chose it for its location with views of the the Esk, the Abbey and, of course, the railway just beyond the patio. It was handy too for the train, the buses, the taxis, the shops and just a short walk to the centre of the town along the Esk. We have no hesitation in recommending Stoker’s Rest.

A beautiful cottage that is well situated in Whitby with its own off street parking is a major plus.
The cottage was immaculate in both it’s cleanliness, presentation and the “goodies” left by the owner which were well thought out and much appreciated. A useful safety addition to the bathroom would be a “grab rail” over the bath which your older clients would appreciate. All in all this accommodation is to be highly recommended.

Cottage was great location Offstreet private parking a bonus Loved watching the trains Very clean on arrival, had everything we needed It was nice and warm throughout We found the settee a little uncomfortable as it’s quite wide, and if you aren’t very tall, your feet, don’t touch the floor The floorboards in the living room Creak terribly did cause quite a bit of disturbance, first thing in the morning or late at night when one of us had gone to bed As the creaking from above was very loud However, I don’t know what can be done about floorboards It’s such a shame that they are like this as otherwise the Cottage would’ve been perfect And thank you for the welcome pack
I am so sorry that you found the settee a little uncomfortable. The footstool can be moved and maybe that would have made it a little more comfortable. Toilet upstairs not shutting off after flushing
Thank you for your feed back. Sorry to hear the toilet was making a noise, our maintenance team have fixed it and its like a new toilet. If you ever have any problems in the future staying at Stokers Rest please just give us a call and we will send someone out to fix it. Like all holiday lets they are houses and unfortunately these things happen.
This is a perfect place to stay for the town of Whitby .
Lovely location with parking, very close to town centre, easy walk to shops. The owners have thought of everything for a very comfortable stay, above and beyond really. All seems newly furnished, beds comfortable and nice soft bed linen. We loved the steam train that passed by too, easy view from patio garden. There are a few trains pass by , but its not an issue, really quiet location. View of Whitby Abbey from upper windows , really amazing. The only fault was towel rail in cloakroom toilet was not very secure, we just left a note for the caretakers attention. The postcode location takes you there, but the cottage is down the slope drive and parking is alongside cottage, at the bottom, not infront, but easy access, our car never left , we walked everywhere.

I am so sorry it wasn't fixed before, I am not sure why it wasn't. We had a wonderful week in Whitby, just before Easter 2023 and our accommodation exceeded expectations.
Stoker’s Rest is a neat, self-contained end-terrace in what appears to be a block of purpose-built holiday lets, styled as railway cottages. It is modern, well appointed, comfy & warm with the added bonus of a dedicated parking space. Plenty of space for my wife & I and our 2 teenage boys. The 2 bedrooms are downstairs with access to the rear yard, a couple of metres from the railway track and every few hours we were treated to a vintage steam engine drive by, with a backdrop of the bay & church & Abbey skyline. We appreciated the lovely Welcome Basket and found the lounge, diner, kitchen area easy to use and well laid out. It’s a short walk into town for some of the best fish & chips you’ll ever eat! Recommend a walk to Robin Hood’s Bay and trip to Goathland/Beck Hole & waterfall as well as Saltburn & Runswick Bay. Bring sunnies & hat & gloves for your walks as the weather can be changeable (it’s North Yorks, so you know that of course). Thanks for a lovely stay!

As stated in the Visitor Book, we have stayed in many properties in Whitby since coming from 2015 onwards, and Stokers Rest rates as one of the best.
The decor was simple but so relaxing and we had the added bonus of seeing the steam train outside, as well as hearing an owl out the front. The welcome basket was a wonderful additional touch which wasn't in all the properties we have stayed in. The bed was extremely comfortable and in the morning a nice hot shower and a 'proper' coffee, started the day off so well. We hope to be back soon.
