The Riddle

Location excellent, close to all amenities and in a quiet spot.

More spacious than expected from the photographs, very clean and comfortable. Good quality bedding and towels. Parking by scratched card easy to do and close by. All in all, perfect holiday accommodation for two.

nice property well kitted out, good location, no contact available to sort problems just a recorded message with poor options, not enough parking permits, listed help center no longer there, no instructions for boiler which appeared to be on but radiators never got warm, text message sent but no helpful reply, unable to talk to anybody to sort out problems

we enjoyed the Riddle & been near everything in Whitby without using the car as the parking was a great problem if u couldn't get out side the property.

.it was well equipped the quality of the bedding towels pots cutlery ect was very good. bed was comfy.BUT the settee was most uncomfortable & very difficult to get off ..a coffee table would have been very useful. also the seating area out side badly needs sorting not at all inviting dirty unkept seats & lots of weeds so didn't use it which was a shame as it was nice & sunny. There was no info on the freezer so all my frozen food from home thawed out which was a nuisance....then I found it 3 days into the week on top of the washer !!!! .plus the TV.was a big problem trying to find the normal channels which again took a few days till I went to the Yorkshire cottage office for help & the lady told me what to do..plus the WIFI was very hit & miss . not been able to open any windows caused a lot of condensation in the bathroom even with the the fan working ..on plus side the Botham gifts were a very nice thought & most enjoyable thankyou .

Our third year at the Riddle, which we enjoyed again.

We just felt that it wasn't quite so pristine as past years although the back yard was greatly improved. The shower low grouting line needed a thorough clean, the lounge floor had been cleaned and swept but not too clean if walked over in bare feet and the front "garden" area needed weeding. We noticed some glasses are missing. Although these are quite minor, we noticed them so are mentioning. BUT the property is well equipped, comfortable, in excellent location, spacious and light. Comfortable bed and lovely furnishings and decor. Good wardrobe/ storage space. And parking tickets are a bonus but necessary. We like our welcome hamper!

We had a lovely week at the riddle.

It has everything you need, lots of little extras in case you forget anything. Tooth brushes, toothpaste, razors , shaving gel & ladies essentials. & more. It has a little washing line a madien & even slippers. The owners have thought of everything, vert thoughtful. Its a lovely apartment very nicely decorated. There was a little welcome pack of biscuits & plum bread.there was also tea coffee sugar. A pint of milk would have been nice, but there's a newsagent at the bottom of the street that sells milk so no problem. We were able to get about very easily 5 minutes from the town centre, or if you walk up the road 5 minutes from the beach. It was very easy to get about on the bus, we went to Scarborough, Robin hoods bay, & stainhes, & the Abbey is amazing. So yes we had a lovely holiday & the weather was great aswell . Property was clean, well-equipped, within easy reach of anything you would wish or need to visit in Whitby.

There was also a welcome pack (coffee for the cafetiere, biscuits and jam) as well as coffee pods, tea bags, instant coffee and sugar. No complaints, would definitely recommend.

We enjoyed our stay at The Riddle the welcome pack was very welcome and a pleasant surprise.

We had a problem with water coming through a light in the bathroom. This was soon delt with.

It was a beautiful flat with everything that we needed.

We couldn’t believe the quality of fixtures,fittings and all the kitchen bits and bobs. Loved the welcome pack a really lovely touch. We felt thoroughly spoilt!! Great location for all the conveniences needed in the town but very quiet and secluded Hopefully will return one day Many thanks

Property had everything we needed for our stay, I found working the TV a bit tricky which was frustrating to watch standard channels.

I must say the welcome pack from Bothams was delicious and worth coming back for. Overall a good stay and perfectly located with parking near by

Very comfortable, beautifully decorated and well equipped. Really felt like a home from home.

We always book with Sykes holidays and have never had course to complain.

we arrived at the property had to park on yellow lines to unload the car.we drove round for hours looking for somewhere to park.there was know where.ended up paying £9 in a car park 15 minutes away wasn't sure whether to go home or not.we stayed 1 night as there are people living above and you can hear talking and dogs barking then the boiler started to make a noise.i have written this before and not heard anything from Sykes we are very disappointed as we have always been good customers.we would appreciate some sort of comment

Just needs parking spaces.

& a better explanation of how to get to the cottage as we spent about 20mins to find it in the rain. The welcome pack was excellent & was much needed after a long journey. Well equipped throughout a lot of thought was there about everything needed.

Fabulous accommodation.

Modern, very well equipped, clean, spacious and a home-from-home feel by the sea. One of the best accommodations we’ve stayed in and we will revisit !

3 out of my 6 night stay was extremely noisy directly above my bedroom sometimes 3.

30ish in the morning, is the apartment above rented? Or is it permanent tenants, also , just a small fridge with no freezer section , orther than that the apartment is lovely.

We had a lovely 6 night stay at The Riddle.

Everything in the appartment is superb quality and you can see there has been a lot of thought gone into the colours and decor. Spotlessly clean throughout. The bed and bedding was top notch and we woke up feeling well rested. Its in a great location - central to everything. We highly reccomend booking it for your stay, and when we come back to Whitby it will be our 1st choice.

Lovely place to stay in a quiet street but near the town centre.

It was a nice touch to have a great selection of items that we may have forgotten to bring along. No problems with parking as we came by train!

The flat is in a very convenient location and I had no trouble finding parking a couple of streets away.

The photos are warmer and more colourful than the reality and the hard floors would benefit from a rug or two. Even in full sunlight the rooms are rather dark. The kitchen is thoughtfully equipped but be warned - the microwave is wall mounted and if you are small (like me) you will be handling piping hot dishes above head height. There was a leak from upstairs via a light fitting into the bathroom which was dealt with promptly by the management.

A fabulous week Very comfortable accommodation Strange to hear noises from adjoining accommodations The noise from the seagulls around the property was extremely annoying from 1st light, around 4am to late into the evening, around 9/10pm .

Whitby has many charming & independent brewery pubs AND The Chapel on the Hill is a superb “ find “

Lovely accommodation and well equipped.

Was very disappointed that after a long journey there wasn’t any milk in the fridge for a hot drink!!! Otherwise everything was good. The parking was a nightmare and it seemed to be a general problem when talking to one of the regular residents.

We stayed here as a last minute booking and chose this over others as it stated parking.

It wasn't until we received the booking details through Sykes did we realise it was on street parking but that is the nature of Whitby We didn't arrive until 9 o'clock so there were no parking spaces available which was a bit stressful, so we quickly dropped off bags and ended up parking in the overnight facility at the leisure centre. The property itself was lovely, clean and very comfortable. I would say that it would be better with black out blinds or curtains in the bedroom as we were woken early by the sun. The shower was really powerful and the basket of cake/biscuits were a nice touch. The property is fairly central but not too close to the busy areas. I would go back and it would be less stressful as we know what the parking situation is. A lovely weekend stay x

Back yard needs sprucing up, at the moment it is not inviting to sit in

the stay was great for all other guest please make sure you put your car reg and the riddle on the parking permit as we forgot with the second one a got a parking ticket so please take care to do this.

A great week though and the rilld is so handy for some local restaurants and bars and is just a short walk away fom the main areas of whitby.

We loved the apartment everything had been thought of and more.

The welcome pack was a great thought. We would go back again if we go to Whitby, we had a lovely holiday even though the weather was mixed.

We had a lovely holiday staying at The Riddle.

Only quibble would be to have a floor rug in the lounge and in bedroom as it felt cold underfoot. Also we were ‘very aware’ of people and dogs in the accommodation on the floor above which couldn’t be helped. Otherwise a lovely cottage thank you.

Great property.

Nice touch with the hamper. Maybe a small carton of milk would be a fantastic extra touch so that you can have that first drink after a long drive to the property. Also a foot stool in the lounge would be nice to rest your feet after a long day walking. Parking permit great but parking can be a little difficult. All in all a great staycation.

fresh/modern and a lovely welcome pack too from Botham`s of Whitby. managed the parking. back yard could do with a revamp and new seating but apart from that would certainly use the Riddle again. Brendan from Warrington.

On arrival I turned the oven on to cook some dinner , to be smoked out by the oven that had a dirty tray left in it.

Also the wall between the bedroom and bathroom was extremely mouldy and damp which isn’t good for someone with breathing problems.

We hope to stay at the Riddle the next time we come to Whitby.

It was perfect for us. The hamper for when we arrived was a lovely extra .

We were so delighted with our Sykes accommodation earlier this year in Ilfracombe, that we booked with Sykes again for Whitby.

We can not agree with the high rating awarded to The Riddle. We have holidayed at Whitby 4 times now, but this was the first time in Whitby itself. The standard of cleanliness was very good internally, as was the quality of mattress - very much appreciated. Bathroom and bedroom were good although sole wardrobe hanging space being in a boiler cupboard was well below expectation and needed venting to avoid tainting clothing. The lounge was disappointing, lacking a cosy feel and feeling more like an impersonal waiting room. Flooring is worn in lounge. Good sitting out area at front which we enjoyed once we had swept it. The rear courtyard could have been so much more pleasurable with a little tlc and at modest cost. The difficulty of parking would prevent us from staying in Whitby itself again (at least during peak season).

Well equipped apartment in excellent location for Whitby Town Centre.

Great for our week long stay. Only issue, as often reported, is the difficulty in finding parking space. Pass was limited to W zone. H zone is equally close and frequently had spaces available

Thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Riddle, amazing location, very clean and tidy, comfortable stay and lots of extras that we weren't expecting.

You do need to get some milk tho, that's not included in the welcome pack but everything else in there was very much appreciated. Only thing I'd say the flat needs is a slip mat in the shower as this is very slippy when wet. We did have to scrub the chairs outside tho as they was caked in bird poo, must of been like that for ages as they was well stuck but thankfully lots of cleaning gear in the flat. We will deffo be back to stay, totally loved it there!

The accommodation was excellent and perfect for a couple.

It was extremely well appointed with everything you needed. The welcome hamper was a nice touch. Only criticism would be parking arrangements which is more to do with the council than the property. It was fairly busy by the number of cars around but heaven knows what it will be like in the height of the season. Would definitely return if we were in the area again.

We found the Tv difficult to work even with instructions just not used to using Smart Tv.

Whilst we had a parking permit it wasn’t explained very well about how difficult it is to park round the area where the cottage is. Outside the property neon impossible parking especially with a bigger car which we had. We were lucky there was no one above us whilst we were there. I think it would be quite noisy if people had been staying up there. That said really loved the cottage and decor. Very competitively priced and we had a lovely time. Thank you.

Very comfortable and conveniently placed property.

On street parking is limited locally but finding a space within a reasonable distance of the Riddle wasn't too difficult. Plenty of good eating and drinking places in Whitby and good social distancing arrangements wherever we went.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at' the Riddle', the location is good, within a short walk of the harbour, close to shops, bars and restaurants but in a quiet place.

The apartment was clean and comfortable, with everything we required for eating in, if we wished. Thank you for the lovely welcome pack, the goodies were much appreciated with a cuppa, when we returned from some lovely walks in the area. The parking voucher and disc are a welcome addition as parking is at a premium in Whitby. We would have no hesitation in staying again in the future and recommending the Riddle. Thank you .

Lovely decor throughout. The welcome pack was a lovely surprise. The only problem was parking but that is endemic in Whitby so not anyones fault. Would highly recommend the Riddle for a staycation in a beautiful part of North Yorkshire.

Really lovely well equipped cottage.

Another comfy chair would be welcome in the lounge. Great attention to detail re fixtures and fittings. We stayed during Regatta week, so the town was exceptionally busy. Some gorgeous walks nearby.

We have booked The Riddle twice before and have had a great holiday each time. Yorkshire Coastal Cottages are easy to contact and speak with.

The Riddle is warm charming and has everything you need for a home from home holiday. Perfectly central to everything...literally ! We would certainly recommend it

Rated the cottage and the service from Yorkshire Coastal Cottages the top ranking of 'Highly satisfactory!' The cottage is in a great spot close to the harbour and shops. Had a lovely alk to Sandsend and on return had fish and chips at the Magpie - highly recommend. We would return again.

We found the apartment really nice. Lovely bedroom and bathroom, living room and kitchen together. Thank you, we had a lovely 4 day break. Weather could have been better but we made the most of it and enjoyed ourselves.
